PayPal and friends and family?

Sorry to bother. I really did try and search for the answer to my question, but the search pulled around 500 forums and the 2 pages I perused did not address my question.

Which is, what is the "friends and family" thing about when trying to do a purchase? I know what PP is, but never heard of this F & F thing before that many sellers are requiring or accepting along with PP. Thanks in advance for any help on explaining this or pointing to where I may read about it.

F&F = you better trust who you are sending money to, because you will have no recourse if they screw you over.

Ask for an invoice, pay the 3% or whatever and the seller KNOWS they better perform or the money will be pulled back.

They do not have to specify gun on the invoice, they can list it by serial number and it's common (keep the tree huggers happy) name.

Peace

“there's no need to have PayPal make a profit from you.”

I don’t understand this line of thought. Do you always cheat and steal from those you do business with? PayPal is a legit legal company offering a service. Why do you think that we should not pay for that service. Why should PayPal not make a profit from us when we use their service? Friends and Family is a terrific offer from PayPal to send actual friends and family members money without fees. It is very nice of them to offer that at no charge. It is not meant to pay for products on a classifieds listing. I know that we don’t always like PayPal’s policies but that is no excuse to cheat and steal from them. Please, if you think I’m wrong please let me know. I’d love to hear your perspective on this.

How ever you pay...ALWAYS..use a credit card the guarentees a satisfactory sale so if there is a problem you can always cancel the transaction !! Most good CC companies offer this feature, stay away from second rate CC companies. I have been thru scammers on a number of ocassions over the years, but never lost one cent because I always use my Master Card. If an issue comes up you can stop the transaction even 30 days after it was made. Never trust any pay source except your own credit card!!!!

I think your misunderstanding what I said. I do not cheat nor steal. Your assumption couldn't be further from the truth .If I trust the person I do business with I see no reason to pay PayPal a fee. There are many people on this forum that I use F&F with. These are people I trust. These people I consider friends. You do with your money whatever you see fit. PayPal will charge you fees even if they can't help you with a claim. All they care about is tracking. If it shows delivered on the tracking they are pretty much out of the equation.

Thanks fella's, etc., for the info and advice about what F&F on potential purchases! I will indeed "avoid" the F&F option and stick to PP or other mutually safe methods of transacting.

@CharlieF: I did do the search on this but it appears I still need to learn how to navigate myself around this new platform and need to learn how to refine search parameters so I don't pull down a million "unrelated" search results to try and sift through, lol. Sorry about that. I had no idea this topic was previously well circled over several times pie (𝝅) squared.

Never, ever do PayPal friend&family when dealing with purchases online. Just never. I’ll offer to pay the 3% tax instead.

If you get screwed PayPal won’t do anything.

Hey thanks for the tip! It's a shame there are so many scammers out there that you have to worry about such things.

Since you are from France. May I ask if you happen to be aware of a very specialized running shoe company in France that makes these really high tech running shoes that had dual spring like shock absorbers. I was just curious if you have by chance might be aware of them or know of any place that sells them. Attached is an image of the shoe. The name of the shoe is Enko. I'm trying to find out if they are still in business and selling the shoe and parts. I know it's a long shot but just thought I would ask. Thanks...

No this if you use friends and family and somebody steals from you by not sending item. And it's over 1,000 dollars that's a felony that is not a walk in the park file a police report .and they will be arrested .I did 18 years selling vehicles and stuff on ebay .even though PayPal says there not liability in there sence in a court of law they would be for proof that you sent money using there network .yes you do have solid recourse.is it a Hassel yes but 99.5 % of time you will get your money and someone goes to jail.

Hey thanks for taking the time to respond and share this very interesting information. This info is good to know that there is recourse for the scammers out there. Now that I know more about this F&F option, I doubt I will ever use it and if anyone that I do not know from Adam insists this as the only option, I'll drop em like a bad habit.

Hey guys, I'm new here but feel compelled to respond here.

Paypal Friends and Family terms have changed - a lot.

It used to be free, now it's not. The fee is the same, except if you choose F&F the sender of the money pays the fee rather than the sender.

So just straight Paypal, if you sell something, you are sent money and the fees are deducted from your incoming payment. With F&F, that is reversed.

Also in straight Paypal, there are protections for both ends of the transaction. With F&F there are no protections.

So if you send someone money with F&F, you pay the fee up front (~3%) and if you never get the thing or service you paid for, Paypal will not assist.

This makes it truly Friends and Family, rather than a way to sell something without paying the fees.
