I would soak them in some sort of oil to remove the oxide then wash and relube them accordingly. It can't be good for you being around when that lead oxide dust gets shot around in the air

FYI: Lead oxide may be fatal if swallowed or inhaled. It causes irritation to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It affects gum tissue, central nervous system, kidneys, blood, and reproductive system. It can bioaccumulate in plants and in mammals.

Coke cleans everything these days ;-) or try to soak it overnight in vinegar.
