Owl looking for dinner

Owls are really cool people! Long, long ago I was bowhunting in the afternoon, and it was starting to get dark. I was standing in my treestand watching 2 does feed their way to me on the acorns, hoping a buck would join them. I wasn't interested in taking a doe, and was only interested in a trophy buck at the time, so I was just watching them quietly from 20' above. Out of the corner of my left eye, my peripheral vision picked up motion coming towards me. Luckily, I turned my head enough to see what it was, and it was a very large owl making his run on me in my treestand. When he saw my head turn, he veered off to his right, missing me by about 3-5 feet. Needless to say, he had scared the crap out of me! As large as he was, if he'd hit me, he'd have done some damage and possibly knocked me out of my stand, where I'd have been hanging by my safety harness. That would have been very bad to say the least, as I was hunting alone and not a soul knew where I was.

Awesome video, and thanks for sharing. Recently i was hunting racoons at night, and using a green led light on top of my Hawke Sidewinder. During a scan, I noticed some eye shine near the limit of my light's range. I thought it was a rabbit or rat at first, but the way the eyes moved reminded me of an owl. I zoomed out just in time to see it fly off back to the trees. Your experience is exactly the kind of thing that makes hunting so much fun.

Years ago on an early morning deer hunt and before sunrise I pulled out my dying rabbit call and blew it a couple of times to see if I could pull in a coyote. I was in my cammies and very still, just listening and suddenly there was a whoshing sound and the top of my head was just brushed, just touched. I guess he figured out I was not a rabbit at the last second. I was impressed. Owls are the original stealth bomber. 😁
