Out side car port air tank

My great white sits in the office with my little foot ball tank all beside the gun safe holding 8 PCP air rifles....

My Shelden compressor is in the garage,,,,

I would like to buy a 12 liter or 9L tank to fit under the table on my patio out side, You no exposed to all the weather Hot cold not so much as water or rain or the sun, Sand dirt bugs yes,,,, I see some pretty cheap Carbon fiber tanks even new ones in the 300 range ,,, Any body else do this any advice as to what to watch out for . I wouldn't think the elements would hurt the tank and gages ??????????????????

Thanks

Mike

General rule is don't expose your cylinders to weather/temp/humidity changes. If you full out your tanks, say to 4500psi and leave it to mid day heat it will be far harsher for the cylinder and gauges.

I have overfilled my Acecare 9L to above 5000psi by leaving the compressor for too long. The tank took it fine but the compressor disc deformed so there is that.

I might make a box under the bench that holds the bottle while I am out there, but I don't think I would want to leave it out there. Temp swings, moisture, UV, and who knows what else will probably affect it for the worse. Id just carry it out there. A $40 used 80cu ft aluminum scuba tank I might be more partial to leaving out under a bench. But not a CF bottle.

Modern Carbon fiber resins and coatings contain UV blockers and are just about indestructible and impervious to UV degradation. The valves are made from stainless steel and brass. Leaving something that is designed to withstand extreme harshness out in the weather will have no structural effect whatsoever. Natural sunlight will never produce enough heat for overpressure to cause any SCBA or SCUBA bottle to fail no matter what it is made of. Do you think that a fireman would walk into a burning building if he thought that the bottle on his back was going to explode from the heat? As for the gauges. If they are SCUBAorSCBA type then no problem. As for some of the cheaper Chinese or paintball stuff, if kept out of the rain, then they should probably be OK. Bugs, dust, or spillage won't harm anything other than maybe an exposed O-ring.

I think as long as you kept the tank from direct sunlight like in a box with some insulation to keep the temperature swings smaller you would be just fine. It may have a UV coating but may not be a good quality coating. I've seen what the sun can do to resin left in direct light for a year and it was not pretty. The temperature swings would possibly work harden the aluminum liner with has a bigger cte than the carbon fiber. 30+ years working with aerospace composites testing and fabricating.

i wouldnt want to leave a tank out in the open ..wind up with a dirt dobber nest right in the valve lol .. or a squirrel might chew something like gnaw your knob off .. then you got to declare war and it gets ugly lol ..

Carpenter bees around here would fill the hose end with dirt. Event the drain holes for the vinyl windows gets packed by the little devils.

Thanks guys

Since I live in the dry hot desert , I am going to look around for a good tank, 12 liters if I can, I think it would be pretty easy to build a small weather proof box, That way it will be easy to dolly over to my garage with the Compressor in it,, I marked it on the project list.
