Ordered a new Hawke scope and a set of Warne rings.

A while back I bought a 4-12x50 Hawke Airmax AO for use with my HW95 and it actually is a pretty good scope judging by the optics however I had a couple issues that I didn't like. The first issue was the extremely fine lines of the AMX reticle which do get lost on dark targets in the shade. The second issue is the lack of reticle illumination to help defining the thin reticle in the shade. The third issue is the AMX reticle itself which is busier than I like. The 4th issue isn't a biggie but the AO only rotates about 180 degrees (if that) from "stop to stop" which does squish together my holdover marks at distances past 30 yards. I guess that the "short AO rotation" also makes the focusing seem to snap in and out of focus quickly so perhaps "issue 4" is a benefit instead of a liability.

Well, I decided to move the Airmax AO to my .177 R9 and I ordered a new "Hawke Sport Optics Vantage 4-12X50AO Mil Dot HD Riflescope 14252 w/ Free Shipping and Handling" from Optics Planet.........

This scope from Hawke is also a 4-12x50 with AO like the AirMax, however it comes with the mil-dot style reticle I prefer plus it has the reticle illumination feature. I haven't received the scope yet so I'm hoping that the optics are similar to the AirMax which are pretty good.

For mounts I ordered a set of Warne "made in America" rings like this...........

Reading the "instructions" from the Warne sight it seems that the screw torque specs are "simplicity itself" since all Torks screws are to be tightened to 25in/lbs. These mounts will clamp to the Weaver/Picatinny to dovetail adapter I currently have mounted on the HW95.

Anywhoo......I'm hoping that the Hawke Vantage with illuminated mil-dot reticle will work for my style of airgunning!

I recently got me a Hawke Vantage with a pretty neat illuminated reticle set up for hunting. It is for 22 and 22mag but after learning the hold over points I am beginning to like it. Zero middle cross hair at 25-30 yards and hold over for all other distances. Easy to see and not busy aside from the numbers on the right side. The + + + hold over points illuminate very well and is adjustable to see during the day time.
BELOW are the other reticles available based on your shooting needs. Note the spacing in between.

Take your time on the Warne rings. I have the exact same set. The lugs like to fall out when you first go to set it atop the Picatinny. Make sure you brace your airgun so that it's one less thing to test your patience. It's not hard to mount them, but will take some careful placement. The instructions say to torque the bottom 2 screws first after having placed it on the rail. I use a cheap 1/4 inch drive torque wrench from Harbor Freight that works fine. Set it to the 25 in/lbs and then get your crosshairs level as best you can. Be sure to check the reticle for level after every few turns of the top screws as the scope may shift as you torque. 25 in/lbs up top and you're set. I love them. A bit heavier than 7075 aluminum or 6061, but I don't fear I'll strip the threads. And you won't with the torque wrench anyway. Use blue loctite to keep things in place and never worry from there on...

Received the Hawke Vantage and after mounting on my vibration/twang free HW95 and the found that the scope itself vibrates with the shot. Emailed Hawke and promptly received this reply............
"Ed
Thanks for using Hawke Sport Optics. What you are hearing is just the internal AO adjustment spring. This will not effect how the scope performs. If you ever have any trouble with the Vantage scope I would recommend going to the Panorama models these are basically Airmax scopes with illumination . If you have more questions feel free to contact me anytime.
Have a good week

I find the vibration to be annoying but perhaps I can simply ignore it.

Here is the scope mounted to my HW95 using the Warne rings..........

I really like the "Warnes" because they do work well. I was a bit concerned initially that Warne listed the suitable scope objective as 44mm max and the Hawke scopes I bought have a 50mm objective. Well....as you can see, the Warnes mounted to a Weaver to dovetail adapter gives adequate scope bell to receiver clearance.

4-12x50 Hawke Vantage Update........
The Vantage did lose it's ping after shooting a couple hundred shots and all was working ok till the field target match I shot last month. My HW95 with Hawke mounted started throwing pellets all ove rthe place, plus the "illumination feature" became erratic when I needed it and even a new battery didn't solve the issue.

I opted to get a RMA number from Hawke but I didn't have the sales receipt, however I did find an email reply from the scope vendor, printed it out, repacked the scope and it was sent to Hawke for a look-see.

After a few days I contacted Hawke and found that the scope "lost parallax" and a new scope was received about a week later (pretty good service). I mounted the scope on the .177 HW95 that has been detuned to about 13fpe for a while now and took a few shots. This new replacement scope has no ping when shot even though I was assured by the Hawke tech guy that the "ping" was normal. So far the scope is "holding the group well" but a few thousand shots will be needed to verify if it's suitable for my purposes.

I did ask the "tech guy" a couple questions and was told that the scope is "springer rated", however he recommended that the Vantage be used on springers with 12fpe or less. I mentioned that my HW95 I was tuned at about 13fpe and was told that it should be "OK", but simply return it if it doesn't hold up.

I also asked how the scope could lose parallax since it was optically centered when used and was told that perhaps an internal lens had shifted. I mentioned that I optically centered the returned scope via the mirror method and was told that the only way to optically center a Hawke was to "spin in vees". He said that with the Hawke the reticle centering has been lab tested and found to be "way off". I asked about the Hawke recommended "count clicks and divide by two" method recommended in the owners manual from previous scopes bought a few years ago. I was told to ignore that old hawke advice because the reticle stops moving before the turrets are at the extreme limits of travel. LOL....these reasons are probably why I could optically zero a Hawke AirMax AO using all three methods and the reticle centering wasn't even close between the different methods. LOL, with my Aeon and Optisan Viper the reticle centering was within a couple clicks from identical using either the mirror or count "clicks and divide by two" methods!

Anywhoo.....it remains to be seen if the replacement holds up on my detuned .177 HW95.
