Optisan CP scope

There was a post about two weeks ago on the Optisan CP 3×12 scope. I have been waiting for a US dealer to get these in as it has been out in Europe for about a year with great reviews. Trienier outdoors has them and I got mine today. I originally had bought the US Optics compact 3×12 which is first focal and has super glass and field of view but I find the cross hairs just too fine below 8 power for a hunting scope in the woods without illumination. So I thought I would try this Optisan for under $400. I must say I am impressed with the glass and it being second focal the cross hairs are the perfect size throughout the magnification range. It doesn’t have external vertical turrets for adjusting but for a mainly woods hunting gun out to 60 yards you don’t need them and with some range work you can work up a dope sheet to refer to and use the ballistic recticle on 10 power. I make one up for my PB guns and put it in the flip up scope cap for quick reference. You do loose some field of view with the smaller objective but dialed down to 8 to 10 it isn’t bad at all. The reviews all said it lacks light gathering over larger front objective tubes so I tested it outside as it was getting dark tonight and I really don’t see any problem for my old eyes and should be better next month after I get my cataracts removed. So I’m saying I’m done with first focal plane scopes for Airguns . This is a great scope for compact guns and under $400.

Nothing wrong with FF scopes for Airguns if you like what they are designed for and use it for the whole power range of the scope. I just can’t see the fine lines of the cross hairs on the lower half of the power Range and some scopes are even too fine in the higher power settings for my liking and use which is hunting and pesting which is primarily in the woods or brush where the fine crosshairs just get lost for me. I have tried the illuminated scopes but some of those appear fuzzy with the fine hash marks and I don’t want to depend on a battery being good. There are plenty of 50mm high power 3 pound scopes with illuminated reticle but I don’t want to load down my compact light hunting rifles with a behemoth scope . I go with the good enough approach for the intended use. 90 percent of my hunting shooting is done within 60 yards with Airguns so a 3 x 12 power scope is ideal for me. A second focal plane is good enough for 60 yard shooting as I said do your homework at the range and determine a couple of Distance hold over points on say 10 power and your good to go. No different than counting the MOA on a first focal plane scope, you still need to know the range of your target and the drop at different distances. Second focal scopes have a Set power where the reticle is divided in MOA or the manufacturers measurement so if that is what your preference is it can still be used for ranging distance and drop just like the first focal plane scopes. I am featuring this new scope because it is a good compact , light hunting scope that is good enough for its intended use. There really aren’t that many compact scopes with parallax adjustment for hunting. I don’t need to see a squirrels eyelashes at 60 yards to make the shot and I enjoy the stalk to get within range more than anything. This scope hits all the right buttons for me.

Agree with most of what you said & I think a lot of shooters are making the circle & coming back. And it works 4 u that is the thing. Of all the FFP scope I have tried never worked well 4 me , hunting tree squirrels from 10-60 yards. To the scope , it is a beauty. If it had illumination but just a dot. I find the rets that have just the dot illuminated are very useful for my old aging eyes, but agree the whole thing lit up is a mess 4 me. I bet they add illumination soon. The next FFP scope I try will have second plane too.

If you asking me I only like certain Discovery scopes some are really crappy like the $399 34mm HD 5-30x56 really junk optics like the $649 MTC VIPER PRO.

You better off buying an Alpha6 $229 EBay free shipling it's brighter and clearer than all my Discovery scopes and spinoffs I own and compared it to side by side including the JSAR labeled one.
