Opinions requested: Buying Broken Yong Heng and Fixing it to Save $$

Folks, Im limited in my resources, being retired. I stepped up from a break-barrel to a PCP, and what with this and that, the wifer is starting to look askance at me. Not a good thing. I mentioned the Yong Heng, and she didn't seem impressed with the joy of putting out as much as the gun cost for it. I wonder if these compressors are so easy and cheap to repair yourself, if there might be a percentage in purchasing a broken one and fixing it. I'm handy and have all manner of tools. The resources are online for the job.

What do you guys think?
 
My Yong Heng does it's job fine but I consider it a disposable item. How much could you save by buying (especially if needing to be shipped) and then trying to repair one? Who knows. Probably depends on what is broken. I've rebuilt engines all my life and have no problem fixing mechanical things, if the parts are readily available. And these aren't complicated machines. How much could you save? I think I might try it if I could source one locally. Otherwise, probably not.

The construction of the compressor is quite simple IMO so it's likely that you will be able to repair it all by yourself. I believe you should be able to get a properly working used Yong Heng at a big discount because there are always people upgrading their YH to something else.

Missed this as I was typing. Agree but the shipping might the be biggest cost-they are relatively heavy for shipping cost. If a person could get one of the new design thicker top pistons then it might be worthwhile to try.

a lot of the early catastrophic failures are due to the weaker piston, it is cheap on aliexpress.

also failure to keep temps down by not using ice in the bucket.

The stock piston certainly seems too weak for the application. Easily replaceable as noted. Ice in the cooling water is something anyone using one of these can do easily. I use crushed ice because I believe it keeps the water temperature lower than blocks but any ice in the cooling water seems to be a very good thing.
