Our attorneys are about to go after them for patent infringement in regards to the Mil-Quad reticle. I had never heard of them until this came up and after checking them out, they look pretty decent. I don't care for attorneys too much, (sorry if you are one but I bet you don't like them either) so I asked them to let me reach out to them first. My mom has always said, "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery... but not so much when its theft". They even named the reticle "SS-2 and SS FFP Mil" lol.

Anyways, I'm hoping to sweet talk them into NOT using our patented reticle and see if I can work with them to offer their scopes for sale in the U.S.A.  So my questions for ya'll are:

1. Are they worth a damn?

2. Are they already readily available in the U.S.A.? I couldn't find them but my Google Foo is not too strong.

Discovery is a Chinese company and the Chinese copy everything. It's even OK to copy tests or assignments for students in China because they believe it's best to copy the master.

Here's a link to their Aliexpress page https://discoveryoptics.aliexpress.com/store/1923286

ApexHorizon is the same company on Amazon ApexHorizon

They also sell on Amazon under the name Discovery

Here is the address they sent me for US returns...

Please return the scope to this address.

Thanks for the heads up, lots of good info.

I've read a few post that mention a person named Charlie selling Discovery. Does AirgunOpticsPlus = Charlie?

Yes.

I believe Vector Optics may be the same company as Discovery since they seem to sell many scopes that are internally identical to Discovery, just better looking outside.

Mr. Farris -

My heart sank when I read this post.

At the beginning of this year, I purchased two Discovery scopes. For the price, I was amazed by the quality, mainly the overall solid build of them. I posted on this forum a few months back that I heard a rumor that some of the glass that Discovery was using was sourced from the same factory that SWFA dealt with. Again, I wasn't sure if it was rumor or fact. Of course, laser-etched glass with the same reticle might seem obvious now. I don't expect you to disclose anything but is this a problem with Discovery or a problem with where both of you source your glass from?

It was also (somewhat) inspired by the fact that the Discovery Optics factory was founded by an ex-design engineer from Vortex (I am told that Vortex is also a vet-friendly company in terms of deep discounts, etc).

Either way, I have read the back-story on SWFA. I am happy with my Discovery scopes. But in light of this, I will not be purchasing any more Discovery scopes until this gets sorted out (or never). I will gladly send my money to the good people at SWFA, Vortex, and other companies whose money falls state-side (a good portion of it anyway) and is involved more with military/vets like myself here in the U.S.A.

I have been eyeing up SWFA for a while now. I am thread-thin on yanking my Discovery scopes off and buying a SWFA. The problem is I just bought a new air rifle (made in the U.S.A. though 🤗) and threw one of my Discovery scopes on it because it has no iron sights. So the bank account is a bit thin right now, but maybe next week though 😀

Please keep us informed of all of this Mr. Farris. If Discovery did indeed steal the SWFA patented design, I am very embarrassed and highly offended at their actions. They won't see another dime from me. Wow I am bummed now.

PT

Edit: If this is true I feel so embarrassed. I consider myself a conservative and I love my country, the Constitution, and everything it stands for. I spent my whole life thinking that China made crap, and never had any international dealings with them. This year, I broke from that and bought my first Discovery scope and I was impressed. Then I bought another one. If they are just ripping off everyone else's stuff like usual, mainly us here in the U.S.A.... I am just flat-out pissed off. PURE BULLpoop. I will no longer buy any ripped-off crap from any of them.

Without details, I can tell you for a fact they will blatantly rip off designs unapologetically. Even big companies and "well known" names will do it without even a thought.

Trying to chase them legally is usually VERY difficult to impossible at best.

PTT,

Thank you for your kind words and support, it means a lot to me.

I can assure you that Discovery has not discovered our reticle supplier and if they did, our supplier would not sell them any of our designs as they are a very reputable company. The Mil-Quad is my baby and I can easily spot the differences in the counterfeit reticles.

It was not too long ago when "Made in Japan" had a negative connotation but its now a positive selling point. I keep this tiny pin with some of my most prized possessions as reminders of how things can change for the better.
