One really dead squirrel......

Guys,

Question to the guys that dispatch squirrels or whoever has some info on this rare instance. I have sent a good number of these pest to their maker, over 200 of them with a well placed headshot.

Almost all the time, I get the typical witchcraft-demon possession dance where they just flop around uncontrollably and then come to a stop. Right, we have all seen Ted's video with the explanation from the good Dr. in regards to the flopping. Well, have you ever had a few that just drop and don't flop AT ALL? Dead as a door knob, not even a flinch, nada, zilch. It has happened to me about 3-4 times through the years. Just curious if you guys have experienced this as well.

Not with an airgun. I did vaporize one with a .220 Swift onetime. Does that count?? ;)

Yes plenty of times. I think sometimes because their head is so small the pellet or the impact snaps the spinal cord or neck where it connects to the brain.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Somehow the pellet made its way to the spinal cord and severed it. I actually prefer the "severed method through the head" more than the flopity-flopity. Yeah, I know dead is dead. It just looks so much more perfect, crack in the head, then a calm slumber. Haha

On my jackrabbit kills, I find the dead right there (DRT) happens more often with a neck shot, rather than the classic header. The shape of the pellet also plays a role. Today I shot a rock squirrel dead center in the heart/lung and the little ninja bugger flipper over, ranger rolled 3x and then dove back into the hole. The video shows a clean boiler room hit - but the all round, no waist Piledriver just made a pencil hole right through. That dude is dead, just not on the spot like I prefer.

My normal hunting pellets are the 28.5 eunjin and those will put the smack down on the rockie squirrels and the jack rabbits, in part because they will slew inside the target.

Head shots do not equal brain shots. They boogie very little when brain shot.

Interesting. What is your idea of very little? Pretty much 99% of my head shots leave the squirrel in an uncontrollable spasms for about 10 seconds. I would hope that with over 200 squirrel kills, I would have hit the brain once or twice. Haha.

From the side I aim between the eye and ear. From the front, just slightly higher than the middle of the eyes The rear, that little bump on the back of their noggin just aching and calling for my pellet to find its way home.

Some of my handy work ; )
