Stole my headline but that was a great shot. I dropped my daughter off to a confirmation meeting and the field I hunt is just a couple blocks away so I thought I’d do a little hunting. It was late, 3-5pm and didn’t think they’d be out but I had some good shots. All told was 7. But the one I’m most proud of was around 70 yards with my Steyr Hunting 5 semi auto. It came to play as I saw this ground squirrel sticking his head out of his hole. It was at the edge of my range so I knelt to have a better platform. My first shot was low and to the right. I centered where the last shot hit on my scope and placed that spot right on his noggin. I let the second shot fly and heard the loudest thwack. I thought it was a definite skull hit, but he ducked back down the hole. I kept glassing the hole, questioning if it was a hit or miss when he jumped out and did his death dance right beside his den. It was very satisfying and my best shot today. Without the Steyr, I don’t think I would have gotten him. Was a great couple of hours.
