On the topic of having time to kill...

Stole my headline but that was a great shot. I dropped my daughter off to a confirmation meeting and the field I hunt is just a couple blocks away so I thought I’d do a little hunting. It was late, 3-5pm and didn’t think they’d be out but I had some good shots. All told was 7. But the one I’m most proud of was around 70 yards with my Steyr Hunting 5 semi auto. It came to play as I saw this ground squirrel sticking his head out of his hole. It was at the edge of my range so I knelt to have a better platform. My first shot was low and to the right. I centered where the last shot hit on my scope and placed that spot right on his noggin. I let the second shot fly and heard the loudest thwack. I thought it was a definite skull hit, but he ducked back down the hole. I kept glassing the hole, questioning if it was a hit or miss when he jumped out and did his death dance right beside his den. It was very satisfying and my best shot today. Without the Steyr, I don’t think I would have gotten him. Was a great couple of hours.

It’s a hell of a lot of fun. I have a powerful Edgun .25 but it’s a single shot. I’m kinda getting used to a .22, but it plenty of fun if you stay within its limitations. But you can hunt all day on a full charge, which is nice. I went out with whatever air was leftover, about half it’s funtional capacity, and it was fine. But the follow up shots are the bees knees. I took two on another trip that would have been one if I had to recock. I’ve also been able to hit em on the run if they were close enough, first miss, 2-4 got him.

Did it again today with a witness! My hunting buddy and I were driving up his private road to our spot when I told him to stop the car. 25 yards out a squirrel was peering out his hole. My buddy couldn’t even see it from the drivers side. But I was in the passenger side, so that meant a left handed shot. So I did my best to do everything opposite and lined the crosshairs with my left eye and pow! Another skull shot and he ducked into the hole. Then he pops out doing the frying pan dance. Then my buddy saw him pop out. Just like the other one, just much closer. It was funny cuz after the shot my buddy looked over to see nothing and then caught the show. We laughed and laughed...
