Omega Turbo Charger

Today I dropped off my omega turbo charger with Todd to reseal and test. It only has 9 hours on it when it started sounding like it was under a strain when it got up to 200 bar it tripped the breaker. We talked for quite a while he is a super nice guy. Something I wanted to share that he taught me about the omega compressors. He told me a big problem is the O-rings take shape of the position they are in if sitting to long. Then when the compressor starts up they may not seal when building pressure. Also over greasing them is bad because grease can clog passages. I thought I would share this. If I had talked with him before I would have used mine differently.

I have the large omega bottle and would let it get as low as I could before filling. I was shooting my Cossman pistols and carbines mostly back then. So in-between fills was usually a long spell. So when he told me these are pretty reliable compressors but need to be ran every two weeks I realized I would have been better off with a small bottle so I would have ran the compressor more frequently. I thought what he told me was worth sharing. Maybe someone can benefit from this.

My compressor history;

I won an Omega supercharger 5 years ago on an Airgun Nation Contest! Used it for 4 years and 260 hours. I was using it once a week to fill my 75 cubic foot tank from around 3300 to 4500psi. Gave it away to a fellow airgunner who was a better mechanic than me. It kept blowing burst discs.

Last May I bought a HPDAVV High Pressure Air Compressor - 3HP - 110v / 60Hz / 1ph - 2.5cfm @ 4500 Psi - Scuba Tank/PCP Rife/Paintball Air Gun Filling Station Adjustable Digital Gauge Control. 2 cylinder very fast fill. First 6 months were great, The last 6 months it has been out of commission. Dealing with China has been a P.I.T.A.! Total of 12 hours use. I bought a warranty so I'm going to try to get a refund.

So last month after looking at a lot alternatives, I ended up buying an Omega Turbocharger off of the AGN Nation Classifieds. The owner had recently bought it from AOA and never used it because of some major medical issues. It had 1.4 hours on it, now I have 3.1 on it. Glad I bought it. It is 2x's as fast as the supercharger. Some people say it is old technology but it works and it has the best compressor support in the U.S. for a compressor built in China. I dealt with Todd a couple of times with my Supercharger.

One thing I've learned with 4500 psi compressors. Sooner or later you are going to have a problem of some kind. Make sure that you have a solid support system or that you are a superb mechanic!

I bought an Alkin several months ago. If I had of talked with Todd before I bought that. I would have gave the Omega another chance. Running it more often. Funny any more I seem to waste money. But maybe my post can save yours. After Todd makes sure the Omega is good I probably will put it up for sale. I can’t see how I would run it enough having two compressors.

Are you disappointed with the Alkin? I feel re-justified in my decision to purchase one with every fill.

For those who are unaware, the first service interval on the Alkin is 1000 hours! I'll consider it as having paid for itself several times over by then.

I am Very pleased with the Alkin! I remind myself without air, I can’t play. I am cheap by nature and would have took the cheap way. I am very glad I have it though

The great thing about owning the Alkin is that it's built like an Abrams tank. It's plug and play, not plug and pray like most hobbyist compressors. Everybody loves their comparessor regardless of brand after the first few fills. If guys add up the cost of multiple purchases of el-cheapo compressors and compare it to the residual value of a dive compressor after 10 years, it becomes a no brainer as to which choice is the better value. Coltri Alkin, and Bauer are in a league of their own reliability wise and value wise.

Reliability wise-yes. Value wise-not a certainty at all. But all opinions count.
