Old New Guy intro

Hello, I'm Ron, just got my second airgun. I sent the first one back for poor design and general clunkiness. While packing it up I decided to hold it in firing position and was amazed that it was worse than I originally thought. If it came with a shoulder stock with some heftt it might have made a good paper weight..... if you have a huge desk.

I did notice the fiber optic sights and had no idea they even existed. I really liked those. Gun still went back.

In late 1949 I was firing.... well just pulling the trigger, while my Dad held the S&W K22 with IIRC an 8/34 barrel. I was 4 or 5, I still had to know all the proper loaded gun lore. I still have that gun and the Mossburg bolt action 22 he got when he was 13. Later in my teens I was around lots of target shooting but I liked guitars better. Still do but it's jazz instead of the Ventures. I even got to play some gigs with one of their former alumni. Jerry MaGee. Good guy from N.O.

I was mostly unaware of the changes that had happened to the old daisy bb rifle I last fired about the time Carl Perkins and Gene Vincent et al came on the scene.
A few months ago I was at our bass player's house and some of his friends were over shooting at pieces of metal in the yard. One of them looked like a Walther PPK or something like that. My uncle had one of those. I was amazed when he fired it and it wasn't very loud at all. That got my attention. So here I am with a Umerex Colt Python 6" barrel and about 50 bb's under my belt and plenty of questions. I chose that plastic version because I have fired a pistol about as many times since `49 as I have bb's this week. I'm sure there are better airguns for the money. My needs dictated the kind of gun I got and of course the price was OK.

We my wife and I live off grid in central New Mexico in a rambling passive active solar adobe home we built together over a period of 10 years. I'm a life long musician who knew nothing about building homes. So we made some mistakes but love living in with with our two cats. Hence the gun.... they take delight in presenting us with their new and living friends who they usually just drop on the floor while we try to coax them out side with it. This results usually a day or two of sleuthing around behind the cats when they alert. I often have to shoot them to get them out of the house. Thereanr tons of tight and dark places to hide so I wanted something fairly quiet and light weight to dispatch them with.

I really like this gun so far. It seems to shoot pretty well. It's me that's the problem. If I use a two hand grip I can hit the bottom of a 1lb coffee can pretty regularly at 25'. So now it's new skill acquisition time and I always like that. Plus it brings back pleasant memories of shooting w/my Dad. I look forward to getting to know some of you and learning more about these plinkers.

Nice intro; nice to meet you Ron.

Be really careful with shooting BBs in general and especially so in the house. They ricochet very easily and will break lots of stuff. Pellets are a much better choice. I think Crosman makes a pellet revolver. Will your Umarex shoot pellets too?

Which air rifle was it that you had and returned? I'm sure you've also noticed that the general build quality that you would have expected 40-50 years ago is a LOT more expensive now. Sights are chintsy until you spend some fair money. Scopes are a better bet.

I bet that was an interesting experience, building your house! Living off-grid seems like it could be a mixed bag. How do you get electricity? Solar? Wind? I guess you have a well and septic system.
