Objective Size, How To Know?

Can you guys give me some advice concerning what determines the size of objective you need on a scope, be it 32, 40, 50 whatever. I am currently looking to upgrade the scope on my Benjamin Nitro NP.I shoot mostly 30 - 40 yard distances. What are the factors that go into determining what size objective lense on a scope would be best for any particular rifle/shooting needs?

The bigger it is, the heavier the scope but also brighter. Bigger lenses are also more expensive for the same quality. More weight also means more stress on springers. Higher magnification also needs bigger lenses to have similar brightness.

Sooo.... you have to juggle the tradeoffs for your particular needs or preferences .

To my view, if you could find a good fixed 6x or 10x in 32mm or 40mm, it should be reasonably light , bright enough, sturdier than a variable, and less expensive for equal quality than the bigger and/or variable ones and all you would need.

Maybe JoeWayneRhea will chime in or send him a PM

He's the scope man around these parts.

He has reviewed tons of scopes!

Make sure it's springer rated.

Personally I wouldn't want any objective smaller than 42 or 44 mm. It really depends on the glass. A top rated scope with a smaller diameter objective can also have a better sight picture than a cheaper scope with a larger objective. It just depends on the manufacturer.

I prefer a variable power with up to at least 24 power. But that's because I'm old and have bad eyes! ;-) Comes in handy when target shooting paper at 30 & 40 yds.

Fleiger,

I just did a write-up for factors to determine objective size, maybe it's helpful to you.

You find it here: https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/objective-lens-diameter-factors-to-decide-how-large/

Other factors when selecting a scope are briefly discussed in this PDF document (including a scope list with specs):
