Nutria Hunting

I've only been hunting these for a few months on my first permissions but what a blast . I'm hunting along a irrigation canal on farm property & it varies around 30 to 35' wide to 10 to15' deep to the water . Here's a few tips for newbie's that I have learned from my experience . If it's sunny out side watch for shining spots in water ( you can really pick them out with their wet heads when their eating) because there moving it so much . Works really well glassing long distance at the vegetation in the water . My second tip is to watch for ripples in the water along the banks ( with over hanging tall grass into the water sometimes they are out of site & you have to wait them out) . I'm having better luck closer to dark ( seeing more ) so I'm planning on night vision for my next set up . Hope this helps out for some of you . I have to add my best in one day was three but yesterday I got four , it should have been seven but that is another story . Thanks for reading Darell

I saw a guy on tv years back shooting nutria along a canal from the bed of a pickup truck and he used a subsonic 22 rim fire. He had a driver tha t held a light and would strop the vehicle she he could shoot, this was in LA in a small town city limits. I think he was DNR.

I suppose you don’t have to retrieve the dispatched nutria at the place you hunt? What predator)s) would eat them or just maggots finished them off? The land owner is ok with leaving them in the canal?

Good shooting!

Tell us about your Airgun/Scope/Pellet choice for hunting them? Thanks!

Good morning C/C sorry about , previously I was using a Puncher Breaker 22 cal. - Athlon Talos BTR 4-14x44 FFP - JSB 18.3 gr. with a Tatsu on the end . Tried out Derricks gun that I just got ( haha you know the one) EDgun R5M long with a Discovery 4-20x50 ffp using EDgun Kings 25.39 . I'm going to rescope both in the future . That Eddie really put's the hurt on them , the water splash from a head shot is tremendous so you have to wait a few seconds to see if you got them . Instant DRT the head & tail sinks & the body floats . Say hello to Derrick for me & congrats on your shooting Darell

markT No retrieval I just leave them there it's to dangerous to go over the bank . It has very steep uneven sides & high grass . The farmer said to just leave everything including birds in the field he doesn't care . Lots of hawks, eagles, owls, & coyotes around But those nutria's sure do stink after a few days lol . I usually give them a break for a few days to let things get back to normal . This place is a honey hole & I will only do head shots so a lot of them got a pass till NEXT TIME . The best time is if you catch them eating or swimming away from you. If they are swimming sideways you only have about 1 to 2 in. to shoot at . Sorry for the small letters I screwed this computer up again geeeeez . Have a good one Darell

I’m shooting the r5m long 25 also. As the gun gets broke in it will just keep getting better and better. Have him invest in a bat moderator from edgun west. It makes a pretty big difference on sound and I’m push mk2s at 870fps.

Thanks for sharing. It’s always nice to hear of someone’s pesting experiences in our own part of the country 👍

Not to much for us to hunt for the laws we have here bummer . I'm trying to find the land owner next to my permissions so that I can sneek through his woods & brush to get to the open fields to shoot the crows . In the open fields I can only get within 300 yds before they fly off but I'll figure it out . I don't like to bother my landowner because he's so busy . Kinda wish we had some of the other stuff these guys are shooting back east .

Thanks Darrel, you have a winner there in that Eddy. And tuned by Derrick Wall, can't get any better than that. That gun was mine for a while but we decided to trade that one for his .25 Eddy R5 Super Magnum single shot, since I want to shoot long range slugs with it. When I had the gun it was good, but after Derrick put his touch on it, it was great. Neither Derrick nor I would ever sell a gun that wasn't accurate and reliable... I wish I had some Nutria shooting down here in Southern Cali, that seems like it would be fun! Keep us posted and more photos please! What scope are you planning to put on the Eddy?

I recommend this one, at $399 its a super good deal...

C/C Thanks for the tip on the scope I just bought a wickedlight this morning with three color combo's white-red-green to try out night hunting with . Should be here in a week so I hope it works .Pouring down rain here so about the time it comes we should have better weather . Can't wait for some night hunting ! As far as pictures not to much to see except a ball of fir in the water as it is impossible to retrieve them . When they die the head & tail sink so you just have half of the body showing out of the water . Derrick told me what the gun liked so I'll stick with them . Thanks Darell
