NRL22 Air Rifle Rules

Hello Airgunnation!

Several of my local clubs hold NRL22 events, and are interested in including air rifles, per the announcement made at RMAC.

The biggest question I've heard though, is ... "What are the specific air rifle rules?"

30 cal max, mass production pellets, and....?!

I'd like to share a full set of air rifle specific rules to the clubs, but I don't see anything thats not extremely vague at this point.

Sorry Paul, but it is not a 22 cal only competition. What little rules do exist have already clarified what calibers are allowed.

I'm also sorry that you tend to follow the tide too closely. Yes, FX had a fantastic showing at RMAC, but it was an FX sponsored event and flooded with FX shooters. The odds were definitely in their favor.

Once EXB in Arizona comes around, we'll see a much more level playing field, being EXB is a Daystate and Brocock sponsored event and will have a much greater showing in diversity.

Anyways, back on topic.

It would have been fantastic for NRL for sit down and iron out a solid set of rules specifically for the air rifle class so shooters such as myself don't stumble into events only to find a myriad of problems.

It'd be optimal to include a rule like, pellets only, 30 cal and below, and a FPE at muzzle limitation, I'm suggesting 70 ftlbs max. What do you guys think the FP energy limit should be?

I'm guessing 17's won't be used that often. 22 cal will be most popular, and the rest split up between 25 and 30???

Often the guy who wins the NRL22 matches is one who's good at shooting off obstacles, doesn't make mental mistakes, manages his time well, and is good with wind estimation.

There are quite a few larger targets that would not be hard to hit with air rifles. I remember a stage shot offhand at onset of the stage with a 6" and a 4" circle, then down to sitting, both at 40Y IIRC, that gives zero advantage to the rimfire vs air rifle.

The 1/4" on the KYL rack at 50y is doable with a air rifle too, just hope the wind is down, other than the 1" target at 100Y, it's the toughest shot on the course I think.

I don't believe a limit on KE is that important. I think they could focus on total cost, such as they do for the 22 class. A sub $1000 class for instance would be VERY interesting!

Completely agree that you won't see many .177's. The 22's will be incredibly popular, but its going to be hard to deny the advantages of the 25 and 30 cals.

Wind estimation is absolutely the key. Especially at 100 yards, and in areas such as KS, where 20+ mph winds is the norm.

If you ask me, if the entries are high, I'd like to see categories for each caliber.

I feel guilty already when I show up with my Anschutz 1827F to NRL22 so I agree it'd be beneficial to have separate divisions in air rifle like you suggest.

I would put 30 cal at a slight advantage because the wider projectile will get more edge hits, especially on the smaller steel and is easier to locate hits on the steel and misses in the dirt because of the heavier projectile, knowing exactly where the shot went sure helps with the rest of them. I haven't done any wind drift calculations but I'd like to see 30 cal reigned in a bit so drift is somewhat similar to 22 and 25.

I'm trying to talk Azrover into getting involved but he says "like I need another hobby" lol.

What would be really cool is to shoot both the rimfire and the air rifle in the same match!
