"Not Suited For Market"

Recently, I contacted a manufacture concerning two models of .177 air guns I was interested in. I've seen both of these air guns in "action" on YouTube and wanted to purchase at least one of them to test out the YouTube claims. My problem starts with the fact that I am based in the US and neither of these .177 air guns are listed for sale by the manufacture's distributors. This lead me to contact the manufacture directly concerning availability.

While I kind of understand their response from a business perspective (it isn't smart to make/offer products you can't make a profit on), it also frustrates me (if the air guns are being made and sold elsewhere, why not offer them where you can to your entire market as there is no additional overhead to do so). Anyway, I thought I'd share the response here and see what input the forum gives in support of the manufacturer's decision or if they disagree with it. I may be wrong with how I am thinking about this and am interested to see how everyone else feels.

Here is the edited response I received (I've edited out the manufacture name and model numbers as they are not relevant to my question).

"This model has a maximum power of 12 ft lbs, 16 joules, so it is not really suited to the US market, as our more powerful models seem to be more popular."

My question to the forum is what do you think about manufactures only offering specific models (where/when not restricted by laws) and limiting what you may purchase instead of giving you the opportunity to purchase whatever you want (again, based on laws)?

Personally, I prefer being able to choose from the entire product line and not a scaled down version of it regardless of what product I'm looking at.

The manufacture did suggest I contact the US distributor concerning my inquiry, but I'd like to see what responses are posted here before I contact them.

It's a simple business decision. Manufacturers require a minimum volume in order to meet revenue goals and they have determined that that particular product won't meet those goals. If you're really dead set on it, request to order direct from them or their recommended retailer/distributor but be prepared to pay shipping from overseas.

Some of the decisions are just plain head scratching. For example, Hatsan makes a rear bolt and side bolt version of their BT65 but only sell the side bolt version in the US. They make a thumb hole stock for their AT44 model, but only sell the thumb hole stock for the pump action version in the US. Keep in mind there is a Hatsan USA facility so I really can't understand why all of their models would not be available to US customers.

In addition to what Chip said, there is also the issue of support. Manufacturers also have to consider support for their products in a particular country. They may choose to support a limited number of products to keep a limited number of repair parts and qualified techs in stock. BSA for example require different internal parts to achieve 12fpe vs. 30fpe. They have almost no stock for the 30fpe rifle parts in the USA and it would cost them even more to support the 12fpe. Also, in the USA, we're always about more power. It's why the 1100fps!!! marketing non-sense works on the uneducated airgun American market. Very few people want a 12fpe gun (I owned 2, they are accurate and quiet and great for those who aren't never going to shoot out past 50 yards) in the USA, even amongst air gun enthusiasts.

Sorry but it makes perfect sense to me, they are a business, not a hobby and are in business to make money, not to supply every customer with every gun they make. They make decisions on what guns to put on the market here and in Europe based on what will make them the most profit, not what will please you the most. Unfortunately that is the way business works, even small businesses have to make decisions based on whether or not something is going to be profitable for them. Big business also usually have to satisfy their share holders, so they are even more profit oriented than small businesses. Neil.
