Noobie Questions and Answers

I was perusing some groups and kept coming across the same 'ol questions from noobies, so thought I would share my wisdom here:

What is the best gun?
Best for what?
Get the one you want, the one that's best for you.
But I can get a cheap one?
Buy it, then you will own that one, and later, a mid-level one, then the one you really want. (tip: this will cost you more)
What is the best gun I can get for $XX?
Google.
But I don't know which guns are best at a given price range?
Youtube. Then ask about the specific one you want, in a forum.
What is the best pellet?
Shoot your gun till you find out. Then tell us.
What is the best FPS?
830 - 1,100 FPS. It depends on your projectile; slugs faster, pellets slower, it splits at about the middle velocity.
Yes, but what is the best FPS for my gun?
Adjust, if it gets better keep going till it gets worse, then stop.
If it gets worse, adjust the other way.
If adjustment either way doesn't help, get another gun- or, consider getting some "professional" help...

I want to stock up on pellets; how many pellets are too many?

One million, that would be my limit.

I am just going to stick to springers.
Coward.
I'm not really sure whether if I want to get into this hobby, I mean the cost, etc?
Nobody else was either, but here we are...
Should I buy a compressor?
Yes.
But, I have a hand pump?
Then, you'll eventually own both.
Should I buy a tank?
Yes.
But I have a compressor?
Then, you'll eventually own both.
Why should I go PCP?
Because your credit card says so, and your marriage isn't working anyway...
I don't have a wife.
Then, you don't need a compressor, that hand pump should be no problem for you...
How do I justify my gun(s) to my wife?
Lie.
But I don't lie?
Liar.
I think I may have too many guns?
See, now you are lying to yourself.
What do I tell my wife when my new gun arrives?
"I shipped this old thing in for repairs; wow, they really cleaned it up as it looks new! I sure hope they fixed it!"
What do I tell my wife when the pellet orders keep coming in?
"This is the 3rd time they sent me the wrong ones! I'm just gonna send them back again and get a refund!"
My wife doesn't believe my shipment stories, now what do I do?
Ship it to your work, then sneak it into the garage when she's not looking.

So far, I'm still married.

Felix, all the questions and answers you have put down are spot on. But I don’t agree with the answer about checking YT for reviews of the guns in question for “the best”. I have seen a lot of reviews saying this or that gun is great and come to own one or two to find out they were just junk. That is why the people here on this forum get asked these questions for real opinions about a said gun. I for one will give a honest answer to a question that has been asked because WE were all that person in the beginning. Great post.

Hahaha, that’s funny man. I know better than to try and slip stuff by my wife or lie to her about what this stuff costs. She’s always listening to the boys and I when we talk. She knows what’s up and after 20+ years, I know better anyway! That’s why the boys are always getting new air guns and scopes. It makes me happy to see them happy and I still get to use the stuff every once in a while too.

Well, second time typing this out as I subscribed before submitting. Thanks for putting a smile on my face Felix! Though my wife is on to me as I'm also a trad archery nut. Try to hide 68" packages when they come. No, she's wonderful. Try using the excuse, we're trading equipment. That works once in a while. :^). Noobie here and I look forward to contributing as I get educated. Little more to this than meets the eye. Only real problem my wife has is looking out at the feeder and seeing dead critters before I can fetch 'em. Thanks for the site snd the opportunity to boost my post count. Cheers! Steve

Wow...I only have 2 pcps so far but it happened just like Felix said.......bought a Gamo Urban(good first pcp),then a scuba tank, now a TalonP, with a donny fl, better pcp, and now want a maverick but too $$$ to justify to wife(especially in less than a six month period so gonna try and nag her for the cheaper Kral empire X in the middle so won't be too hard to finagle.............especially with the stimulus checks😆 supposedly coming?

Soo True

My PCP journey/addiction started when a friend gave me his Gauntlet 177 for the weekend to try out. That quickly turned into an Umarex Origin purchased 2 weeks later on Black Friday then a Tanto and adapter from DonnyFl for the backyard. Two weeks later bought a Kral Puncher Breaker 22 from Troy Hammer and while waiting on the Puncher I bought a Benjamin Cayden which is just awesome. Back to DonnyFl for a Sumo for the Cayden. Now I need a compressor and this is after buying a cheap Amazon handpump to replace the Umarex hand pump that had to be rebuilt after 3 fills and still doesn't work. Finally the Puncher Breaker arrives now I need more pellets and another scope and rings. I have officially jumped into the Rabbit Hole head first 4 months = 3 guns, 3 optics and rings, a Tanto, a Sumo and a compressor.
