Night shot mouse/rat? without NV

I was proud enough of this rare night shot (I don't get many chances at rats/mice) in my back yard that I had to post it.

Perfect head shot that passed all the way through exiting just above the anus. Shot was ~20 yards.

Benjamin Gen2, .177, CPUM 10.5 @ ~755 fps for ~12-13 fpe ME.

I would lower the fps/fpe, but I am getting less than 1 MOA from 10 meters to 40 yards. When I could shoot out to ~60 yards, it was also 1 MOA or less using same pellets. So I hate to mess with success. Backstop was/is my wood fence, which it did hit after passing all the way through this rodent.

Don't change a thing and you couldn't ask for a better shot!!!

I am BIG fan of ratting and the shots are scarce, thanks for posting.

Thanks! I totally agree! Accuracy/precision trumps everything. Especially in a small caliber at relatively lower fpe.

This makes 4 rats/mice, 20 chipmunks and about 100 tree rats for the year... so far.

Last year I got ~75 chipmunks and ~20 rats/mice at the end of the summer season when their populations exploded. This year, if the numbers stay on track, looks like I will bag exponentially more which makes me happy and sad. Happy that I will have many more targets and sad that it seems no matter how many I kill, they are like the "energizer" Bunny.

Oh well, I am not happy when I don't have targets either... (chuckle)

Geeze Dude that's an excellent tally and for me accuracy trumps all as well.

Rats are scarce here these days and believe me I try hard... red led, bait station, doorbell camera with alerts. The GS, on 80 acres, took a lot of lead this year and may have to 'save some for seed.'

Happy Hunting Sir!

Thank you sir! I know there are more rats/mice, but even with baiting them I don't get many chances. I do better during the day for chipmunks and tree rats.

Max115 suggested the red torch, but I don't think that would help me for rats/mice since I have 2 floods on all night for security and 2 that are motion sensor activated.

Check out his "Air Rifle Pestings" channel on YT @ Air Rifle Pestings.

I put out the green neurotoxin (Bromethalin) bait blocks for the rats/mice and if they don't do enough, I will look into NV... but I gotta sleep SOMETIME! LOL!

No amount of bait will make rats magically appear if they don't already live nearby. I created a lot of rat funerals and I am GLAD. Still bating and loving it.

Oh, I KNOW they are there (rats/mice). I see them when I can't shoot them. All I am trying to do with the Bromethalin is to kill as many as I can that way and the chicken scratch I put out, mainly for the birds, is also in the hope that it will entice them into my safe "kill zones". Of course, I have to stay up most of the night to get a shot even then. So I don't get many shots at rats/mice.

@Backstop

Are you in an area where WIFI can be used to setup doorbell cams? Maybe you are doing this technology cheat already?

Ranchibi, a great guy here and on GTA, pointed me to the XSH Cam (doorbell camera with alerts) and I've never looked back. AWESOME stuff.

May I hijack and post my favorite video taken with the cam and if not that's cool.

Mr. BackStop,

Good photo and excellent shot. I really enjoy posts about successful rodent hunting. Your tally of kills is amazing!!! You are one of the "MASTER BLASTERS".

I learn a lot from hunters like you, JohnnyPDX and Ranchibi, good bits of information I glean from your posts all the time. My hunting success has improved reading posts on this forum, so a Thank You to all of you guys that post in the Hunting section.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Just got a rat in the corner of my yard @ dusk last night. Sucker was about 5" long (not counting tail). My wife was thrilled I shot it, NOT thrilled I showed it to her! Through the head at only about 18 yds with a borrowed .25 Vulcan. 1st one ever shot in this yard. I'm sure there will be more but I'll make sure my wife is blissfully uninvolved!

I already have too many motion sensors and security cams to keep up with for the 2 legged rats.

As for the video post away!

Thanks! I too learn a lot from the other folks here. I especially like to hear from other pest shooters!
