Happy to be here, thanks for the invite.

Ok, I wasn't invited. I'm just here.

Went from 0 to 15 airguns in the last couple weeks. I have been a hunter all my life, but never really have been a 'gun guy'.

Because airguns are far more interesting to me, I've learned more about the science of shooting in 2 weeks than the last 40 years.

Here's a couple pics of the herd:

MountainAire,

Do you own multiple mountains in deed or just consider all of nature yours to enjoy?

I got your humor and threw some right back.

15 airguns in first month. Reminds me of someone who had some money & a new addiction. Here’s my advice. Stop now. Seriously.

Don’t waste money on entry level stuff if you’re already enamored with pellet guns.

Go right for the best of what you can afford. I don’t know if hunting with AG is allowed in your State. You may have the time & money to travel to Thurmond’s T3PRanch in Texas to hunt with your or his airguns.

Be it a top end tuned spring gun. Master tuned PCP capable of pellet on pellet at 50 yards or turn her up for slugs. Or a rifle for slugs only, for far target fun or hunting.

I’m telling you all this because I went through a lot of money that I should have spent differently. I should have bought one Rapid/RAW & a full machine shop w/ tooling & instrumentation when I had the cash to do so.

I also was a Whitetail/Varmint Hunter w/ Bows & Centerfire. Varmint calibers being my favorites.
Your experience as an Archer is fundamentally the same as in how subsonic projectiles kill. Placement, placement, placement. That & stalking to w/in distances that are realistic for placing the ethical shot.
Yes, I do send slugs 400+ yards but on targets. I’d never attempt anything past 250 with current .22 & .25 slug guns.

Now when I get my .257 Scandalous with 1:14 0.750” x 28” Lilja sending 55-86 grain RBT (BC .212+) at 1000+fps, Heck Yeah I’d go for Yotes & WhistlePigs at those distances. Oh, and then I’ll also have the heavy slug barrel. The 0.750” x 32” Lilja 1:10 that will send the 86 to 120 grain RBT .257’s at same 1000+fps. You can get a set up similar to the above mentioned one for $2200 on up.
John Bowman, Son in Law of Jack Hailey makes them. The Scandalous name arose from the 1/8 moa claim of accuracy.
Then the calls of BS on the 1/8 moa.
Then LASSO, & the apologies for calling him a liar. That’s where he put 19/20 through a 3” ram hole at 300 yards in windy conditions. All witnessed by Mr. Dempsey, & a Crosman Engineer, through Kowa spotting scopes. 35 other guys were there also.

welcome aboard

Thank You :)

Wow lots of new members as of late! Welcome and good that you could be here among the rest of us hopelessly addicted souls. Plenty of good people around to help you out when you need it and you can do the same. Enjoy

I don't doubt it. When the smoke clears, the air will remain. Thanks for the welcome!

You don't seem quite right in the head!! That's awesome!

Yes, please. Thanks for the welcome :)

Welcome! Nice introduction

Sounds like you took the plunge into our “pew pew” world head first. It’s about to get deeper. Enjoy!

Thanks! So like, snorkel, or SCUBA?

MountainAire,

One deed, one mountain. We belong to nature, not vice versa. As many are learning.

15 airguns in first month. Reminds me of someone who had some money & a new addiction. Here’s my advice. Stop now. Seriously.

There's always one.

I went through a lot of money that I should have spent differently.

Sorry to hear that. Was it yours though? It's ok as long as it was yours.

I also was a Whitetail/Varmint Hunter w/ Bows & Centerfire. Varmint calibers being my favorites.

I am not a bow hunter, and have never killed a deer with anything but a truck.

Dead or alive, to me anything past 100 yards is target shooting. I don't need or want to shoot game at 250 yards.

Now when I get my .257 Scandalous with 1:14 0.750” x 28” Lilja sending 55-86 grain RBT (BC .212+) at 1000+fps, Heck Yeah I’d go for Yotes & WhistlePigs at those distances. You sound excited. Enjoy it when you get it. Personally, I would buy a few guns for that kind of money, so I could do a few different things with them. Something else to consider: I didn't sell any firearms to buy my airguns. I have a Roberts .257 that will triple that speed. Why would I drop 2 grand on a pellet gun with far less performance than a firearm I already own? Maybe, just maybe... everyone has a slightly different perspective. I'll build guns. I am building a gnarly little 2240. Because it's FUN. Try to remember that part.

Here's another group I bought new, for $50 each, if that's ok with everyone.

More than OK, MountainAire. The discussion of "buy once/cry once" vs. "Start simple with less cost, discover if this is your passion" has long been floating around AGN. I advocate for the low-threshhold myself, being a fan of less costly guns that do all I need. Whatever your preference you can find friends here to share knowledge and experience with you...and throw plenty of shade as well! All in good fun. Mostly.

Keep us up to date on the 2240 project. That is one VERY popular model to frankengun!

MA, yeah, experiment away, it's good fun and this is a good way to figure what you prefer or dislike about every gun.

Next rabbit hole to go down is riflescopes. Pick scopes rated for springer's as we call them because these springers can destroy regular hunting scopes due to the violent forward recoil. On PCP airguns you can pick any scope but you'll want scopes that focus close, ideally 10 yards minimum, but I use scopes that focus at 25Y for the rifles I won't be shooting any closer than that.

For me it gets redundant with cheap air rifles, well even $1000 air rifles, so only super nice stuff turns my crank anymore. There's a bunch of them that I wish I hadn't bought to begin with and can see now how to of spent elsewhere but that's the price it takes to learn I guess.

Waiting on a barrel and breech from Pyramyd air on the 2240. Their site order handling time is ridiculous, I will not order direct from the site again. From their ebay account it ships right out. Haven't had much luck with them overall, I'll probably avoid them altogether for a while. I will post on all of my projects in this thread so subscribe if you want to :)

Scopes are pretty foreign territory to me. My first shot ever with anything was with an open-sighted 760 pumpmaster, dropped that sparrow deader than dead. Kinda have a knack for it. Although I do plan to acquire some higher quality ones, I'm apprehensive about scopes because they never seem to stay sighted. My eyes do.

My Swarm Magnum .22 shoots tight groups at well over 1000fps and with the right finger on the trigger, will absolutely take down large animals. I can't really understand why people spend so much on custom pieces, but I wouldn't tell another working man how to spend his money. I prefer airguns that resemble conventional firearms. The look of most custom airgun builds doesn't appeal to me at all. I do however see a lot of guys spending 2k or more to do nothing but punch holes in paper. Whatever floats your boat :)

Here is another cheap, stock, boring break barrel that I had to have. It will shoot lead at over 1000fps as well. $149.

I like the storage in the stock. 200rd tins fit very nicely.

The Co's advertise those embellished velocities so people will buy their super dooper cheap magnums. That is done with the lightest pellets made that don't shoot well at those speeds. It's a marketing strategy.

The normal weight pellets that do shoot well are usually in the 800-900 fps range. Well to me is sub 1" at 25y for a Springer.

Unless you have a chronograph you wouldn't know the actual velocity.

Referring to the posts above, the TR77NPS will shoot nearly the advertised 1200fps with 5 grain alloy pellets, and over the advertised 1000fps with 7.4 grain lead. The .22 Gamo Magnum easily exceeds 1000fps with 16 grain lead. I have never tested or witnessed an alloy test with that gun so I can't post on that.

Speaking of scopes, these are all of mine that have scopes, all stock. Doubt any will hold up long term, but I would welcome a surprise.
