New Taipan Veteran .25 Long.

Regarval

My veteran long purchased from RL Airguns was shooting at around 940 fps. I installed the DonnyFL speed dialers and adjusted it to shoot 920fps. The veteran 25 long is very close in accuracy as my power tuned 25 cricket. I average at least 0.5 inches or slightly less at 50 yards with the 34 gn JSBs MK2 pretty consistently.

That's awesome!!!

I had no idea the newer Veterans could have the cocking lever moved to the left~~~

Right now I'm looking for the best price and most power/accuracy for the buck. It has come down to the Veteran or the Vulcan. I love the Vulcan mid cocking lever, but I don't love the inflated price. The Veteran is the better deal, as both are near equal in quality and performance. My last Veteran was a .22 Short. Not quite enough power and being left handed, that rear cocking lever was a pain. But this was back in 2015 and I suspect there have been some chances since then?

How long is the "Long"? Too long...or is the Standard the better buy? I'd like the Shorty but I'm concerned about loss of performance.

Any thoughts?

The standard is an awesome machine in size even with the DonnyFl Sumo. now if your goal is to use heavy pellets (33+g) I would definitively take the long as you will get higher speed out of it thus more power. When I bought my standard .25, I wasn't aware of that and I am now thinking that I should have gotten the long one just for that reason.

Now that gives me a new excuse to get it and pass the standard down to my son. ;)

I originally had a 25 Veteran Std and was considering enlarging the transfer port to shoot the 34 gn JSBs over 900fps. I didn't trust my skills to do that despite seeing the Ernest video of him doing that. I sold it and bought the 25 Veteran long instead after seeing a vendor's shot string of an out of the box gun. I also have the 25 Veteran compact and it's shooting the 25 gn JSBs at 890 to 900fps for two mags or 20 shots. The Veteran long and compact compliment each other well depending on the distance you are shooting.

I would love to get one with the Laminated stock from Balistas but they dont ship to the US "yet", they look a bit different from the ones we get get here https://www.balistas.com/air-rifles/taipan-air-rifles/taipan-veteran-standart-635mm-laminate/

If you notice from the picture, the CZ logo is printed on the action, i undestand only the 22cal barrels are from CZ and 25s are from LotharWalter.

I loved my .22 long plenty of power and great accuracy.

BTW all the Mutants and Veterans could have been switched from right to left...

Well...looks like I'm going with the Veteran Long in .25 caliber. I ordered two mag holders and a cheek rest from Papy, so all I need now are Donny's speed dialer knobs and a moderator. By the way, how loud is the Long without the moderator??? Do I really need one? My neighbors fall in the "Asshole" category, so I need to shoot quietly! Having fun is not easy these days!!!

I don't shoulder both rifles much since I shoot off mostly bags and bipods. I would give the better balance when shouldering slightly to the powertuned cricket since my gun has the long skeleton stock with the longer forearm. Unfortunately those are not available now and only come with the standard length skeleton stocks. The crickets purchased with the bulldog style wood stocks with the magazine holders have the longer forearm as well but I never held one of those. The synthetic stocks are shorter but heavier than the skeleton ones. They both balance pretty close the same for me but I give a slight edge to the cricket.

I agree with xz10wall that the Veteran 25 long is a better value since more features are included like very adjustable trigger, better shroud internals, threaded end of shroud to accept LDCs, anti double loading mag system, 20 moa rail, more advanced HSTA, etc. To purchase a power tuned cricket, you would have to spend $1400 on the gun then get it powertuned for about $200 more or just buy one from Charlie to save a little dough. The Veteran longs are only $1289 and come with more features. You might get lower shot count for the Veteran long at the same velocity settings as a power tuned cricket but will be saving at least $300 if you went with the Veteran. They are both tack drivers and have almost identical accuracy and both have the LW barrels.

I hope this helps.

The Cricket has a CZ barrel and the Veteran has the LW.

Help an old man out here...why is a FFP Front Focal Plane scope so much better/expensive??? I'm not even certain what a FFP does in a scope?

Don't they all use a magnifying lens inside to raise the power? Seems to me the clearest scopes in my limited experience have all been single power lens.

I'm confused...but that's nothing new in my life! I've been married to the same woman for over 50 years...my brain has been seriously damaged!!!

it is first focal plan not front

the reticle is view at different plane. On a second Focal plane scope the size of the reticule will never change. so when you zoom, your target will change in size in comparaison to the reticule.
On a first focal plan, the reticule is alligned with the picture coming from the scope. So when you change the magnification, the reticule size will change too.

What all of that means.
On a FFP your MOA or MIL are allways true no matter what magnification you are using. a MIL or MOA is always what is was calibrated at.
On a SFP you MIL or MOA will change depending on the magnification. You will usually have one mark on the scope or it is the max magnification that shows you the magnification at which the MIL or MOA are calibrated . look at that link to see what it looks like in the scope. FFP vs SFP

Usually people like the SFP for hunting and prefere FFP for target.

The price difference for FFP vs SFP the same scope will be due to the technology and maybe some hype.

When you talk about the fixed being the clearest, it come from the simplification of the light path. Less lenses, less loss.

Both Veteran and Cricket in 25 have Lothar Walther barrels. The Veterans and Crickets in 22 have CZ barrels. Check TalonTunes and RL Airguns websites.

I don't want to start anything here but Crickets have always had CZ barrels. If you go to Talon Tunes website it clearly says CZ hammer forged barrel. The only bullpup air rifles in .25 caliber with CZ's are Crickets and Vulcans. This I know from talking with Matt Dawson at R&l.
