New prices for used item! Down right disrespectful

I know you can’t put a price on someone else’s merchandise, but why does everyone want full prices for used items? (I’m talking here on Classified section.)

“Guys are being ridiculous with these asking prices for items that are clearly used items.” Most of the prices I see are just a couple dollars under retail and I do mean a couple and the kicker is they are not willing to negotiate not one dollar!

I’d rather pay full retail which includes a warranty and peace of mind instead of almost full price with nothing to show if there is a problem with the purchase. Just my .02

And then there are people who offered me sub $400 offers for a rifle that is one of only 7 in the USA which are known. Hasn't been made in nearly 20 years. And you won't find another one for sale ANYWHERE. I'm currently working on a possible trade for a new $2000 air rifle for this same rare gun. The buying lunacy goes both ways unfortunately.

Yes you have low ballers and tire kickers , but that’s part of the negotiation process not full price for used items. If I see a item listed for full retail I’m going low ball offer just because you want full price. What’s the difference? I don’t care how new or rare it is to you full price is down right UNACCEPTABLE! Even big box stores offer discounts on open boxes and returns marked refurbished or open box and most are in fact new but none the less discounted due to either someone opened or bought the item first.

I agree with you completely. Nothing used should be sold near full price. I was replying about behavior I consider similar. Where you have to wonder about common sense.

While I agree that a used item is certainly not worth full retail price, no one is forced to buy them. I'm with Maineiac on the likely strategy. Start high and lower over time until it sells. This is really the only way to get the best possible price for the item because auctions are not allowed (thank goodness). It allows the market to set the price.

For example: I started selling a rifle at a high price recently and lowered the price with each weekly bump of the ad. It took a couple months, but the rifle sold. I was satisfied because I feel like I got the most possible for a rifle I know to be outstanding. If I had started at a low price and it sold right away, I'd probably kick myself for not listing it for a bit more.

Pricing a used item is tough to do. The best deals are found when someone wants to get rid of the item quickly for reasons that are likely personal to them. Not everyone is experiencing a cash crunch and I don't think it is fair to expect every item on the classifieds to be "jump on it now before it is gone" type of deal. That would be a scammer's paradise.

Regarding lowball offers. They always make me feel uncomfortable. I never give lowball offers because it feels like I am disrespecting the buyer when I offer them. I hate getting lowball offers for similar reasons. I realize I am in the minority here (it is likely caused by my social anxiety kicking in). I don't even like going to garage sales where haggling is expected.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't mind people posting items with expectations I consider unreasonable. The market will either prove them right when it sells, or educate them when it doesn't.

im so glad you brought this up ,,some of the adds make me laugh ,,then and i see this a lot ,if you browse through ,sites like DVOR,,, and twice a year SWFA sells there scopes ,for 20 to 25 % off on black Friday and maybe MEMORIAL DAY,,thats a $700 SWFA scope FFP 3 15 42 on sale for $525 ,,,the same week as the sale ive seen the same SWFA scope sell for $550 ,on the classifieds ,,makes me wonder if the O P is selling there scope just to get a brand new scope an identical one for the same price as they sold there old one ,,people just need to be careful of what there doing ,,ive also seen items sell for what i would call a good bargain i usually miss those lol, there are some that try and give a fair deal for both parties ,ive seen our mod sell several items and they go quick for a honest fair deal for both parties ,,A R is totally right why not buy the same product brand new for a few $ more and get the assurance and warranty that comes with it PAT

15% to 25% off and in some situations 50 to 75% off (used, abused, broken) is what used items should sell for. When I put something up for sale I post the fair price I need and not more. Today's society has made many profiteers like "RE-Bayers" who exist for pure profit and not to try to pass along a deal they might have received.

I have sold 3 Taipans (.22 Mutant compact, .25 Veteran std., .25 Veteran compact) on here, all at about $1k plus shipping so about $300 off new. All had less then a 1k rounds thru. And all went within a few days. I have had a few low ball offers but ignore those. Some guns are just more in demand then others. My prices are very reasonable for like new gun that someone can have for a little discount off new that they might not have gotten/afford new. It is what it is, supply/demand.

Perhaps the resellers are taking into account they broke it in for you?

What really bugs me is when some people post on youtube and brag

about how they get to buy new guns and use them and sell them and

break even. AND often SELL for MORE than what they paid.

Even problematic guns which the seller isn't fourthcoming

about.

I don't mind paying close to full price from only a few trusted sellers

who I have dealt with before and keep their guns in PRISTINE CONDITION

who are totally honest about how the gun really shoots.

Just a suggestion from someone who has no skin in the game. I have purchased lots of used US made hand tools over time. Name brands you have heard of, brands you have never heard of, re-branded tools (e.g. Penncraft for JC Penney). Generally over time you start to calculate how many pennies on the dollar you are willing to buy for. Craftsman maybe 10 cents on the dollar. Snapon is 50 or 75 because of resell value.

If you start evaluating guns like that then over time it may become easier to determine without emotion if the purchase is worth it to you. Anyway, just the way I purchase things used. It allows me to remove the G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome).
