New Portable Shooting Rest

I finished my portable shooting bench. Two pieces of 3/4" plywood with 1.25" black pipe which screw in out for portability. I countersunk 2.5" grade 5 bolts and washers into the top of the wood. I then filled in with that wood bondo Minwax calls High Performance Wood Filler. The stuff is like rock once hardened. I went ahead and left it plain sealed with poly as plywood sucks for stains. I cannot believe how strong and stable this is. I could jump up and down on it. I put the rubber caps on the bottom as I shoot off my just refinished wood deck a lot. Yes, it's overbuilt like most of my projects but it was a lot of fun.

I got the 1.25" pipe from Lowes. They cut and threaded it to the length I wanted for the legs free. I think it was $30 for a 10 foot length. Remember you only want one end threaded. The caps 1.5" for the pipe ends off Amazon for $2.50ea. The Grade 5 bolts, nuts, washers I had around from a project years ago. You can get them at many hardware stores or tractor supply etc. Carriage bolts will work OK too and you really don't need washers the entire 5x5 plate is a giant washer. Bolts are 7/16" so pretty meaty. I had the plywood but you can get that anywhere. Prices have gone up.

The angled flange brackets were the real hard part. I was going to get just standard round floor flanges you can find at hardware stores or Amazon. I was then going to make an 18 degree cut on a piece of hard maple I had left over from a project as a large shim. It is a pretty unique application to have these angled flanges and they were impossible to find. They are quite a pain to make for the average DIY guy.

Then I found a guy over on a hunting/fishing website who had sold some for a while but no contact for months. His flanges were threaded for 1 1/4" pipe. I took a shot last week and the guy responded and came through great. These are way better than any customs I saw. They were $50 for 3 shipped or $65 for 4. Crummy generic China made floor flanges are $30 for 4 so I thought these were quite reasonable.

Length 34” (some like it longer)

Width front 24” (standard width quarter sheet of plywood) some like it wider.

Width back piece is 16” (I shoot with a Protektor rear rest and like a lot of room for my elbow to rest)

Back piece length is 19” (some like it shorter)

Legs are cut and threaded to 28” (some like them longer. I had a good 8” left from my 10’ piece of pipe so 30” is doable.

My doubled ¾” plywood piece after cutting was about 20lbs so bigger gets less “portable” and that was why I put on the handle and kept it compact. This 1 ¼” pipe is heavier than you would think. This shooting bench is a tank.
