New permission & picture

Guess where I'm going next weekend!!!!

Nope, not here. Somewhere better, see below. This picture was right along side Hwy 82 in NE Oregon and only shows about 1/2 of the squirrels here. I stopped and talked with the property owner and they're bringing their cattle in to graze this pasture this week so it's out. They said maybe later in the year.

On my last trip to this area for work (2 weeks ago) someone told me the local cemetery has a lot of ground squirrels in it. So, I was back working there this Tuesday and drove through the cemetery to scout it out. The back fence borders a wild grass field and there were dozens of squirrels running back and forth under the fence into the cemetery. I stopped by the city hall but the building was closed to visitors so I called the receptionist who put me in touch with the cemetery board administrator. I called her and explained that I could use a "pellet gun" to discretely help them eliminate a bunch of ground squirrels. She wanted to know how much I was going to charge and when I told her I would do it for free she chuckled and gave me permission but asked that I also run it by the grounds keeper. I called him and he also agreed. SWEET! A mowed lawn full of squirrels with NOBODY downrange. I plan to set up a pop-up blind in one of the maintenance roads and shoot towards the fence line so no grave markers get hit. This will be a speed shooting event I think. I'll post afterwards.

If you can get a reference from a permission where you shoot and their is livestock there, the farmer who is now reticent to allow permission wouldnt give it a second thought. Almost every shot I take I have to make sure there are no animals in the back drop and know where the farmer is so I don't send something his way. I was kind of shocked that it was a concern that you might hit his livestock. I've shot hundreds of rounds in and around the barns. Even shot while walking inside the animal pens. The first time the rifle went off they looked up quickly. Now they just ignore me. Well! It is disconcerting to feel a longue tongue searching out you pants pocket as you are leaning on a post and have a bird in the crosshairs.

Oh! Forgot! I use a Doghouse pop up blind often. It's not expensive and has plenty of room for 1 and gear. What's really important is when you go to the store to choose a blind make the sales rep take it down and put it up. Then you try it. That Doghouse is up in about 2 minutes. Had other 'higher' quality ones that were a total PIA to put up. In fact gave one away to a hunting buddy.

Thanks for the tip on the Doghouse. I ordered a 2 person blind because I almost always take my best friend and shooting buddy.

I too am ultra careful about backstops and don't even want the perception I'm taking a risky shot. The farmer that declined this time said either earlier or later in the year I could shoot. She mentioned her brother, "John Doe", used to like to come up from my area and shoot ground squirrels. This "John Doe" is an unusual name so I asked if he used to work for OSP and taught criminal justice at the college. Low and he hold, he did. I mentioned the forensic science class I took from him back in the 90's, how I really enjoyed it and that really got her to open up. It's a small world.
