New Member and Introduction

Hello y’all

New to the forum and wanted to say hello and introduce myself! I’m not sure if this is the etiquette here but what the hell thought I would share my airgun experience so others know where I’m at in our hobby. I like how knowledgeable most of you are and the work you’ve done to take your skills and guns to the next level. I really just like that I found a bunch others with the love of everything airguns. I was very impressed reading the threads like the ballistic info thread as a non member. This forum is a wealth of combined knowledge and I want to be a part of that. That’s what made me want to sign up, learn, and hangout.

So a little backstory on my experience:

I’ve been into air rifles and pellet guns since I was a young teen back in the 90’s. Most of y’all can probably relate to that first experience that sparked a life long hobby.

The first airgun I ever shot was a CO2 BB pistol that my pop had. We would take it to the lake and if the fishing sucked we would skip BB’s across the water. Didn’t catch the bug yet, was pretty young and barely remember it, only remember I was with my dad and I having fun.

When I was a teen my best friend got a Crosman pump pistol. I can’t recall the model number but it was a pump pistol around early 90’s. I liked it and wanted my own. The first gun I bought myself was a Crosman backpacker, my first pump. Oh the joy of catching a chunk of hand or finger while quickly reloading when hunting squirrels. Wish I still had it for nostalgia. I gave it to my friend when he moved to Georgia a few years after high school.

Shortly after the backpacker, I bought a Gamo P-23 in the mid 90’s. That was the gun that got me hooked! For some reason I loved that gun even though it was a PITA to load a pellet and BB’s weren’t accurate enough for my taste. My best shot with it, the shot I will always remember, was when plinking with my buddy I shot a bumble bee hovering around a clover right out of the air from around ~15 feet w/ open sights. I felt like SUCH a badass lol.

Somewhere along the way I picked up a Crosman 2240, I’ve had it forever and keep telling myself I’m going to mod it but just haven’t, it’s still original, still open sights. Would like to change out the receiver, bolt, extend the barrel, add optics, and an attenuator. Maybe someday, or pass it to my son and encourage him to do so. Love taking out frogs with it though.

My first break barrel is my Gamo Hunter bought sometime in the late 90’s / early 2000’s. I didn’t like the scope on it so I shot open iron sights and still do with that gun today. Good ol’ springers... It’s old and used hard, it’s the one I give my son who’s 13 to shoot when he comes out with me. He’s a little guy like his dad was and bit heavy for him but he does ok. Has to put the butt on the ground to cock the spring lol.

After that came along my next Gamo, a CFX in .177. Heavy as a horse but pretty accurate. I really really like that gun and my only regret is not getting it in .22. That’s the one I pull out to target shoot when I want to decompress and throw some lead. I have a long basement 80’ so I can take it down there and do a lil target with it on a table with a rest.

I’m still using springers and shooting a Gamo magnum .22 these days. This gun is relatively new and I’m quite fond of it. It is sort a bitch to cock when shedding lead for fun in the backyard or woods, definitely get an arm workout from it. But it has enough umph to keep me happy and to hunt small game without using powder. I’m more than accurate for a one shot with the others, it’s just my go to these days. Doesn’t have the best long range accuracy imho, but I’m not taking long shots hunting in the thicker woods around here or taking out the rabbits eating my wife’s garden.

I haven’t jumped into the pcp category yet but close to dipping my hand in that pool when I except the price point taking into account the gear needed. They seem pretty incredible and I have lots of questions before investing in one.

It’s amazing how much the technology has changed since I was young! I’ve learned quite a bit from here as a non registered, but it’s time to sign up. I particularly like the ballistic info thread I stumbled onto in one of the forums, awesome stuff, never new about ballistic coefficient before. Very glad to be here, thanks for having me, and hope to some contribute somehow to this awesome forum.

Hope this post isn’t too long winded, I hope some of y’all read it or at least say hi.

Thank you for the welcome guys!
I’m glad to hear other shooters think springers are a-ok and still shoot em even though they’re into pcp guns as well.
I’ll try my best to chirp up when I can on something I have experience with, but have a feeling I’m going to be doing a lot of reading and question asking. Most likely starting with the optics forum for opinions on new affordable hunting scopes 🙂 eyes aren’t as good as they used to be.

You'll find a lot of info and help here glad you found it welcome. The type of gun depends on type of shooting you do. Obviously pcp's have power and repeater capability. That's why I love them. I say if you're thinking about it and can afford it go for it!

Thank you for the welcome guys! This forum is an amazing wealth of accumulated knowledge of first hand experience from many different shooters with different styles and setups. I’m very glad to have found the forum, it’s really nice to be around others that are passionate about and enjoy shooting.

@jay3658

pcp guns are really impressive! I can see me saving up for one in the future. You are right they are quite the investment, it’s going to be a while. Ideally I would like to start with a beginner and someday move to a nice setup after gathering equipment and more knowledge of them. There are so many and seem quite intricate with tuning and all, but the accuracy seems amazing.

@blackpaw

I like that term “air arts”. I do like powder and used to deer and bird hunt. However, nowadays I prefer the air arts myself as well. They’re quieter cleaner (no brass) and for me just as enjoyable. I can easily shoot in the yard without scaring the neighbors. I have 40 yrds of clear line of sight with a hill for a backstop, prone right off the deck on bag rests.

stay sharp stay well guys!
