Tuning New Crown Power Wheel is in the wild

It appears FX has started shipping the Crowns with the new Power Wheel with the updated power settings.

I called FX to check on them and they said they are the same size as the previous one. You can get them directly from FX, as they are a part, not an accessory. I just placed an order for one. I’ll report back when it is warm enough to shoot.

Any chance you know the part number of the new Crown Power Wheel?

Sure do, It is part number 19908.

Based on my experience with these, just something to watch out for.

My newest Crown is a .30 cal with GRS stock, and it came with the new Power Wheel.

Funny behavior when I got it - The first thing I always do with any newly received rifle is cock it and shoot it in a safe direction to ensure no pellet was left in the gun. The gun had been received with the power wheel set to '24' (the dot between 23 and 1), and when I fired the gun the power wheel dropped to setting 1.

When I get a new gun like a Crown, the next thing I do is record all the settings and chrono test it as received from the factory. I wanted to start at 24 and work my way down with the power wheel just to see where the pellet velocity numbers were. Once again, if I set the gun to '24' and fired it, the power wheel would drop down to '1'.

So I took it off and this is what I saw:

Now I've had my share of Crowns, Impacts, Wildcats, Dreamlines, etc., and I know to never adjust the hammer spring pre-load wheels when the guns are cocked, so that never happened (at least while in my hands). I haven't pursued this any further with FX - I figure that 23 positions is plenty adequate as opposed to 24. So I just changed the micro adjuster grub screw to where I could shoot at lower numbers on the power wheel.

But it got me to thinking:

1) Was my gun mis-used at the dealer to cause this?

2) Is the new Power Wheel 'fragile' (it appears that the lip broke off)?

3) Does the new Power Wheel actually have 24 positions, or maybe only 23?

Maybe mine is a one-off case, but just something for you guys to watch when you get one.

Thanks Smok3y.

Ordering one tonight!

I received a new Crown this week with the new power wheel. I can confirm that the dot between 23 and ! is not a viable selection. I had it there for a few shots and it slipped into the 1 position. Not sure if it universal, but my experiences mirror yours. That said, 23 settings is plenty for me, and at setting 23, my Crown with a 380mm barrel is a laser with the .25 Hades and the Nielsen 26.8 gr slugs.

Between the transfer port wheel and the new power wheel I can dial the gun from 865 fps down to 466 fps with the Hades.

Thanks all for pointing out that dot after the 23. I was wondering which way I was going to install it, so this might settle it. I was trying to decide whether to put the rifle on Max And then install on 24 or on Min and install in 1, so I guess this settles it. I also too like to document all the speeds (changes) at each setting. Just need to get some warm weather to do it!

Why does that indexing need 2 steel balls ? I’d take one out ….

grub screw “eats into” the aluminium try to find one with a little cap on to distribute force more even per setting.

So the power wheel won't get canted when you tighten the screw.

Thanks! I was thinking about waiting for the after market one but probably just gonna order the FX version instead since they have it in stock.

Does this wheel, due to the cut out on the cam behind the wheel, cause it to not turn CW once you hit in between setting 24 and 1? You’ll hear a click when you’re at that midpoint due to the hammer adjustment screw falling into that notch and thereby keeping the wheel from turning CW?

im curious, as this is how the M3 Impact wheels are designed also, if the M3 owners get a lock on the wheel between 16 and 1

not really, the hammer is free floating style so if the gun is not cocked the preload block/screw is not against the power wheel. I have after market wheels and FX new micro step wheel so far no issues going between max and min.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem with the new factory FX power wheel. When developing the Montster power wheel for the Impact. Some of my early testing, we ran into this exact problem. That's why we manufacture current models out a material hardened to a rockwell 65. We are prototyping and testing a Crown replacement wheel as we speak. But right now things in the manufacturing world move very slow.
