New cheap .22 options

So I am in the market for a .22. I am leaning toward a refurb bsa buccaneer or refurb at44s. I basically want to keep it under 400 bucks. I have a compressor and a scope i can throw on there already. Any thoughts on either of these guns or perhaps something else under 400. Should i wait for the air venturi avenger in 22? Maybe a nova if I can find one in stock somewhere. IDK. Not going to be hunting with it just want a back yard paper puncher. I have a 70fpe .25 for hunting. A decent shot count and accuracy are at the top of the list. Thanks guys for any input.

I personally wouldn't spend my money on either gun mentioned however the BSA is the better of the 2 but you still need a Huma regulator for it and you're not gonna get a good shot count anyway. I'd look for a used Sumatra if you can find one for $400 you can crank the power down and get tons of shots for good ok back yard plinking fun. A good LDC is a just since its inherently a Bob Barker gun. If you can handle a heavier than average gun the Gauntlets are inherently accurate shooters more so than a used Marauder in 22 with the barrel lottery unless you buy a new one with the improved Crosman barrel. I bought my second Gauntlet in 177 and it's a tack driver at 50 yards just like the seller stated (that's why I bought it even though I already have one in 177). With a little minor work they can be manageable and pleasant to shoot. If you buy a used one it's probably gonna be smoother shooting to welcomed wear and tear. Benjamin Fortitude would be my next choice but worry about the leak issues and the trigger mod affecting its 5 year warranty but if you get it cheap enough go spend $70 for a Challenger trigger group and trigger guard and an old credit or gift card to cut and use as a shim spacer. Maybe a Kral bottle gun may fit your bill as well and you can crank the power down too. Good luck let us know what you end up with. Yo!

Yea I gave my hatsan 135 away to my friends son for his bday I hated it so bad. Thought maybe the at44 would restore my faith but I guess I will stay away. I have probably $200 worth of 22 pellets and no 22 to shoot them with. Not sure if I want another gauntlet. I have one in 25 that I love but just want to try something new that isnt so big and heavy. I may just wait for the av avenger to ship and try my luck with that if I cant find something used that I like soon.

I have a Buccaneer. The Gamo Coyote is virtually the same gun so you may want to look at it too. The Buccaneer, with JSB pellets, is as accurate as anything costing 5 times as much. It is nice and compact but a little heavy. If you buy one, forget about regulating it. I have tried and all I achieved was a 30% decrease in shot count for less power. I could have tuned it to give more shots per fill but it would have been at the expense of a lot less power. This gun has a very good self-regulating valve that will give a reasonably flat power curve for about 30 shots at 30 FP with an ES of about 25 FPS and a very low SD. Regulated, I could only manage about 18 regulated shots at 28 FP with an ES of 10-15 and an SD about the same as unregulated. My gun seems to have a problem with breaking cocking pins every 2-3000 pellets. I don't know if it's just a problem with my gun or whether it's a design fault. Lucky it came with a three-year warranty, now expired. You might also want to look at the Gamo Urban. It is a bit lighter has a little less power for about the same number of shots but has a crappy plastic stock.

TalonP in .22. Avoid Hatsan: see my recent thread “worst airgun you own/owned” and you will know why

Hehehe a mini cannon for the back yard... Yo!

Oh sh** I totally forgot hot loud these are. I have a moderator that costs $200. Don’t buy this gun as I own it and it is too laud without a moderator I’d you are shooting it in the backyard. Good catch Kyloyo

How about a Benjamin Fortitude? Sportsman's Guide has them for $249.00. If it doesn't shoot as well as you want Crosman will make it right.

And unlike a lot of the other air gun companies their parts support is unequaled.

I have had Crosman before and yes, their redeeming quality is that their customer support is through the roof.

Nevertheless, #cameforcrosmanstayedforweihrauch

Benjamin Marauder in carbine configuration...can be fun

Thumbs up on the p-rod. Very accurate and tuneable from 6 to 16 FPE to make it backyard friendly.

If your only plinking it should work great.

I have a Seneca 25 carbine, great gun, over your budget and very loud and that is the fix that puts you over the budget.

Any airgun can break the budget if you can’t leave it alone, this Prod was $375.00 from PA. The after. Market parts put it over a thousand.

Hatsan are dual purpose guns, once you get tired of the quality control issues, the robust weight and trigger guard make them ideal for disposable boat anchors.

I think those results show a very over tightened hammer spring on the Buccaneer. Mine with a Huma reg set to 125 bar and the hammer spring 4 turns from full out gives me 50 shots @ 22 FPE. I back out the hammer spring to 3 turns from full out when I go to AAHFT competition to be 20 FPE legal. It stacks JSB 15.89's in one hole @30 yards and shoots the cheap CPHP's in a small clover leaf at the same distance. My only complaint with mine is that it weighs nearly 10 lbs with a 4-16x50 scope.

I agree with your findings, Eddie. I was looking to get near unregulated power and had the reg set at 160 bar, at the knee of the curve, with the hammer spring at stock tension. Backing the HST down only resulted in reduced FPS. I mentioned that I could have got more shots from a different tune but that was not what I was trying to achieve. I'm surprised to hear that you could get 22FP out of that set-up. I also agree with you about the weight but it is still quite a bit lighter than some of the other suggestions above.
