New ART barrel from Daystate

So I have been working with Daystate for a little while and they asked me to test the new ART barrel , To be honest the first barrel I had on my Red Wolf was not up to much and did not really like any pellets other than the .22 JSB 25 grain RD's . Nothing else really worked at all . I was a little shocked and not overly happy about it . So chatted to Daystate and they sent me another barrel , I was told to "really put it through its passes" and shoot lots and lots through it . A buddy of mine and I went to the range and chromo'd the old barrel , changed over to the new barrel and , wouldn't you know it , the velocity's shot up ! I was concerned that this new barrel would not work with the 25's , 25's RD and 33.9 JSB's . It worked brilliantly with all the pellets but not with the normal JSB 25 grain's. It still spat them everywhere , The Re designs worked so so well as did the 33.9's . So after a good while I started shooting groups , Sadly we had a 15 MPH cross wind full value and this was moving things about , I dialled out as much as I could and started shooting groups , we had 70 yards to play with ... and did they ever work !! I was shocked how good this new barrel is . I am now waiting for another day with low wind to really see what this can do . So far I am blown away at how good it is , I have studied the new barrel and talked to Daystate lots about this at the IWA and now I think I have a jolly good idea how good I think think this can actually be. I am loving it and plan a whole bunch fo hunting once I put a load more through it . The 25 RD's just group so well as do the 33.9's . Not sure which to use for Hunting as yet but I am sure I will find out once a put a load more through the gun . So far so good! I will post some groups up once I get to the range again .

Not to be pretentious!, but what are your credentials?, WHY does DAYSTATE have so much confidence in your abilities for precise feedback in testing, give us a little background on why DAYSTATE chose you for testing this barrel?, do you shoot competitively? Who tests a barrel in a “FULL VALUE” 15mph crosswind unless you already have a baseline of how it groups in Ideal conditions and at different yardages w/different pellets (lots, head dia. Weight etc.) in those Ideal conditions?, better yet wouldn’t all of this taken place months before barrels were put into production?, what’s different about this barrel?, did they ask you to “TEST” this barrel w/ slugs?, better yet show us how well it shot! I apologize if I miss interpreted what your post is concerning or what your trying to communicate to us.

Good questions my friend,

I was sponsored by Daystate a good few years ago for HFT when they released the Daystate Platinum , I moved from them to BSA and help design the BSA Goldstar , I am currently the British Team Caption for the HFT and shoot in the World Championships all around the World . I work with Gunroom TV as a presenter for their shows and have worked lots with Fieldsports TV with Airgun and bullet gun . The reason I shot in a 15 MPH cross wind was purely because I got he barrel and was desperate to see what it was like . I did not want to wait , I just wanted to shoot it as you can imagine . As for slugs , we dont have any here at the moment in the UK but I was talking wiht Pavel at JSB at length about this very thing. I also test pellets for JSB and have done for a good while . I also work with Vortex and am sponsored by them for HFT . I run the HFT Masters HFT competition in the UK and also Vice president of the WHFTO World Hunter Field Target Organisation .

Hope that answers your questions buddy .

Thank you!, Hope I didn’t offend? Your credentials are impeccable Sir! Please keep us posted, I also have Daystate RW .22hp, LOVE it!

Not at all buddy . You have to ask and I don't blame you . I am just trying to book a 100 yard range for next week with my buddy to see what we can do with a bunch of different pellets and stuff. Still loads and loads to do but so far the gun has been amazing . I shall post groups at 100 ( indoors ) to see what it can do , When this storm does one and moves away , I will do my best to get some groups in "real world " conditions . I have seen what Ken Hicks can do , I chatted to him at IWA and I want to see how the ART barrel compares to his stuff. I will post up what I can .

Guys it would helpful if instead of using term slow twist or fast twist the actual twist rate was mentioned. It can get confusing because a fast twist barrel is a lower number twist rate then a higher number. Typically a heavier bullet needs a faster twist rate and therefore a lower number then a higher

example which is the faster a 8 or a 12 ? It’s the 8 because it’s the number of inches it takes for one complete revolution going down the barrel.

So a fast twist means the barrel is attempting to spin the bullet harder requiring more turns down the barrel and therefore smaller number.

So when you say shallower grooves and faster twist it seems like perhaps this would be working against each other.

I dont know what the typical twist rate is in an air rifle

During the testing with Roger above, what was also really surprising was that the JSB 18.13 grouped extremely well also, velocity I think was between 1050 & 1100 FPS!

I have the 35FPE RW and it won't group the JSB 25g Monster at all at 70 yards, I have now fitted the 24" RW HP Poly barrel to it and am going to do some testing with it indoors at 100 yards VS the 18" barrel, velocity increase with the HP barrel was about 40FPS.

We will then compare this directly with the new ART barrel indoors at 100 yards and see what happens, as Roger said aside from the accuraccy of the ART barrel the velocity increase was staggering, over 100FPS with the same length.

The lower the number the faster the twist rate!, example= 1-8 twist means 1 complete revolution of projectile in 8” that’s a “fast twist” barrel, example= 1-20 twist means 1 complete revolution of projectile in 20” that’s a “slow twist” barrel. Want to clarify, I’m not suggesting that is in anyway to the twist rates Daystate has chosen for their barrels? just an example... I’m sure they are much slower for the HP versions and maybe even slower with the new upgraded electronic’s, solenoids and capacitor’s etc.

Yes . When you are changing twist rates AND groove depth or shape and seeing benefits what is the cause. Just suggesting we agree on the terms being used. Seems we do .Then you complicate things even more with the choke on the barrels.

I am waiting for the GCU V.2 to find out if they do , I hope so . Would be handy if you ask me . Lots more testing to do . Just wish the weather here in the UK would get better .. Its shocking at the moment . 50 MPH winds ... Horrid !!!

Does this mean you can up grade a current RedWolf with the new GCU V.2 Circuit board for a 20% increase in power.

Thanks Michael
