New .22 Slug Data WOW

Im getting .220-.221, i pushed a few through the LW its tight but they do go. I got a sizer so i can experiment with that too.

Weights are 35.3-35.9 so far.

That seems smaller than my "5.52". With wheel weights and my poor technique, mine are averaging 0.221-0.223 measured at various points over multiple slugs. Weights are around 34.7gr.

I measured about 15 of them and almost all were between .220 and .223 I did have one .224 and chambered that and shot it at low power inside. Chambered about as hard as a piledriver. Anything smaller than that slides in nicely. I did have a few in the .218-.219 range

I used about 95% used pellets and the rest range pickup shotgun slugs and big cast bullets i'd spot. I smoked the mold pretty heavily so maybe that changed the dimensions slightly? First time doing it so maybe it's something I did although I'm pretty sure I'm getting the big ring full but maybe i'm not and its averaging out a bit lower. It's a happy coincidence because basically since I ordered the mold I was kicking myself for getting the 5.55 rather than the 5.52.

I was amazed how fast it goes, I was using a little two burner camp stove with the propane bottles. I would heat up the mold over one burner but at first I had the sprue turned away from the heat and that was causing issues. Later on I would just hit it with a little propane torch if I took a break and came back, got the sprue really hot as well so it just pisses down into the mold. I had the sprue handle 180 degrees to the other handles and just a whack or two of my palm and it would cut it. Pellets released great!

I made some pure lead 5.52 slugs today with the MP mold. My technique is clearly improving, since I discarded only about a quarter today, rather than half of them. I was even more critical as well, discarding anything with a visible flaw. The average weight with pure lead is 35.19gr. I tested some with and without running them through the .217 sizing die, and there really wasn't much difference in accuracy. There "might" have been a slight improvement with the un-sized slugs, and they weren't nearly as hard to chamber as the ones I made with wheel weights.

Sadly, my Impact slug liner doesn't seem to like these as well as the NSA slugs, or JSB pellets. I need to do some really careful testing to see just how much worse they are, but I'd bet the group size will be double the NSA at 70 yds.

What speeds have you tried so far?

I use max power for everything these day. My goal for shooting slugs is to find the one that has the highest BC, and is accurate at near supersonic speed. If I have to reduce power to find some special accurate speed, then they fail to meet my goal. I already suspect the MP slug won't win any BC contests, but I haven't measured it, so it might surprise me. It's also too heavy to ever reach the speed I want with an Impact, so I'm not sure how much more I'll mess with them. They certainly aren't bad, but at least for my particular barrel, they're no match for the NSA slugs.

I wouldn't expect them to be as good as NSA or pellets, id be happy with 2-3 MOA at 100m for essentially free ammo.

Shot some of the first casting at 50m today, im actually pretty happy as this was from the Royale and only at about 800fps. The Boss can get them to almost 900.

A few just under an inch and have potential

So i cast 3 more tins worth today and the backs filled out better. These will shoot better i think.

wow glem you are a casting machine holy cow lol , Glem can you tell me what gun you tried them in and I do know you got the 5.55 and I got 5.52 , did you size them down or do they load ok , also are you using a magazine ? remember these bigger are they going threw your mags with n pressure they should just fall threw your magazines , I fine alot of magizine need honing let me know Lou also , I am getting a bit tighter do u want to try my 5.52 and or I can try yours so we can compare which ones best . I find with all molds the end users are the R+D , I know I spend alot of time trying to improve it slightly .I have to say I am happy with both my molds I did buy aproz 15 molds during 2018 and I like these alot , only ones I liked better is Arsenal , a you can customize sizes and weights and shapes , , I have even had him make me multible slugs in same mold and even If I order a custom size of weight it is here in 3 weeks max , only draw back is he doesn't make under .270 so I only could do my ED-GUN R-5 30 cal and I got 3 deady slugs for it , and they do shoot as good as NSA ,

Glem is your boss rifles or ST , ST doesnt shoot slugs well for me

The Beauty of Arsanal is you can make a slug for your barrel and or to fix your Magizine and tailor it to size with pure lead wheel weights , just you need to say what size u want slug to be and what you cast with , he will get it within .0001 and weight to .001 so you can make a pretty deadly lug for your gun with no sizing or nothing . just wished he would make 22 and .25 he aid his machines cant go that small

Haha thanks with the casting I couldnt believe how fast it goes, got the 8 cavity and did all those in the last picture in an hour and a half. I did it outside of course and put a fan right behind the campstove pulling air away and wore a good respirator didn't have the fan last time its way better with. I had an unchoked lothar walther polygon blank machined to fit my Royale so I was using that today, then I had a little adapter made up so I can slide over the breech end so that it fits in the bigger Boss breech. I've been sizing them in that little T.Robb sizer basically having it at max depth and it seems to make the difference between hard to chamber and a good push. I kind of want it tight as its unchoked and I want to make sure I get a good bite. I can get about 800 with the Royale and almost 900 out of the Boss with these at current settings. (Boss was shooting .25 today)

Yeah maybe down the road a bit I can trade you 100 slugs or something? Trying each others mold is a bit tricky as I'm in Canada, and shipping would be kind of poop. Sounds awesome about the molds I'd basically only be interested in .25 and .22 slugs at the moment but down the road who knows maybe .30.

Yeah I just plinked inside with the .22 ST barrel inside the house I wouldn't expect any slug to be good out of them.

It's a shame we don't get any of the Edgun bullpups with a removable stock. So basically everything but the leshiy so far, too bad.

Glem after sizing can you still see the rear rain on bullet or is it just a lug when u done can you show close up of before and after sizing very close picture I want to see the rings please , the rear ring should be bigger then the front , the rear band is what gets cut If I push threw my barrels not the middle of the slug

Yeah i can still see it, it only really affects that last ring like you say. Same pellet.

Me Ido not lube slugs unless I do resize them and I only use 1 lube which is best and I have used it for decades

a small amount will last for ever 1 drop can lube a hundred slugs easy I roll them on a lube pad with this is only if sizing slug and also no need to clean off or lube it is actually fine for airgun barrels

BEST Sizing LUBE

Glem is that a push threw or a tapered hold and u marked a punch ? ok I use either a lubematic if I size and have lube rings , if I have no lube rings and I need to size I use a push threw like this here is picture of both i use

Hey Glem did you make that sizer if so I need to pick your BRAIN lol , on Machining not bullets

also I see the rear ring on your sized ammo , I still see ring so that cool .you want ring to bite in . If u use hard lead they will be a bit maller but soft lead when shooting at decent speed the pure lead does expand from the air like an explosion and it bite into rifling better .

No I didnt make it haha, its tapered and part of the t.robb sizer in the picture.

I mark the punch as a depth gauge so i dont make them too small, if i drive them too far down i can get them to .210 lol ask me how i know.

I found a happy place around .218 using my primative tools. These should shoot better, my first target the sizing was all over the place ill size whats left of those as well.

If you find a size you like, Lee makes custom sizing dies, which work very well. I have one that's 0.217", and it only took them about 3 weeks to send it, not the 8+ weeks they advertise.

Thanks for this i didn't know they made custom sizes. Ill try these next time out and see if it tightens up. If it works ill look at a more efficient solution.

Thanks!

Yea all make them , best thing is have molds made precise no izing but we live in imperfect world lol

My lyman I only use for heavy slugs from 73 to 500gr with lube rings

the lees ones for my reloading pres the red one I like for 22 cal

and I like The simple NOE one for .25 and .300

If you just bit snug you can experiment with different temps or an alloy to tune sizes with out sizing , I only size if I have to . and also I have 3 pellet molds very heavy skirts for hi power , I learned if you size them accuracy gets worse o I dont size them aas kirt and head different sizes
