Needed 50fpe to bring down this giant thing

Was getting settings dialed in tonight when I noticed something literally bouncing around out by my 65yrd spinner tree. Took the shot and saw it go flying. Had to walk out there in the darkness to investigate. After briefly fleeing from a skunk, I returned and found this long range trophy. I recently made a comment about not using a sledgehammer to put on door molding. A .25 with a slug was a little overkill for this little bugger but at least my gun is dialed in. Look what you’ve done qball.

Dialed in is right, 65 yards on a small, skittish rodent is an awesome shot...

It happened rather quickly but I think I had to time it. The thing would bounce around, hesitate, then bounce around again. I just knew the second it stopped, a slug had to be on its way immediately. I fully expected the thing to not be there when the slug arrived. I guess it got there in the nick of time.

Mr. Vetmx,

That FX Sledgehammer proved up on its ability to handle any size target and range, you may have helped a little. So the skunk is on the target list for tonight ??? Choose your point of impact wisely, maybe a pass would be the best choice. We all know the olfactory revenge the striped kitty can deliver.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

All skunks get a high speed .177 dome through the liver. Let Mother Nature deal with the carcass. Shooting a skunk with a larger caliber is just asking for angry neighbors. This skunk doesn’t seem to have a hair trigger or a leaky gland problem so I’m gonna let him be for a while. After all, he is a very good janitor when it comes to cleaning up after the little critters I shoot. I don’t stack dead animals daily so he is able to keep up.

Oh yeah, don’t forget to record the next shot like that! Field mouse at 100 yard? Think it’s time to put some bait out!!!

I did record a raccoon getting it last night. Quite dramatic and definitely not rated PG. Ironically it was the same raccoon I wounded when my hammer screw migrated and my Impact started shooting like crap. I knew it was the same raccoon because one of its headlights was out. I guess because of my own personal hunting ethics or morals, when I wound something it is the ultimate failure. I was really mad at the gun. Things like a hammer screw moving on its own is not even acceptable on a cheap airgun. Some of my cheap guns have set screws to stop that from happening.

Mr. Vetmx,

Some very good points, I notice you have referred to the skunk as he, not going astray here...the only skunks I ever have issues with are the females. If I get one that takes up residence around my sheds, a parade of love sick males show up, they fight and spray each other and cause me massive amounts of aggravation. If I can eliminate the female my problem is solved. My aim point has been a 50/50 favorable result at best!!! Brain hits versus vitals, sometimes I get lucky, some times OMG...how can anything that looks that awesome smell so evil.

My eldest son's high school graduation 25 years ago was horrific, he actually agreed to wear some nice new dress clothes at the ceremony...(he is part feral) well the skunk fest fixed all of us, no amount of washing, perfume or old wife's tale remedies helped. We all smelled so exotic we sat in the back row and I said loudly, gee it smells like a skunk got run over at a Channel # 5 tanker truck wreck (luckily, the ceremony was outdoors). Poor guy will never forget that night.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Very interesting about the rutting males and their squirt gun battles. It explains some things that happened over the years.
