Need a little more power than a daisy bb rifle for photography use

Have a question. I am a photographer and enjoy shooting things, breaking them and capturing that moment of destruction with my camera.

I presently use a daisy bb/pellet rifle. It gets the job done on most things, but I am looking for something a little more powerful and maybe a bigger caliber.

Below you see a photo. The daisy rifle does a good job when shooting through one or two things, but the liquid really slows down the bb after it goes through 2 glasses of water. You can actually see the bb between the 2 & 3rd glass after it hit the third one and bounced back, lol.

I am wanting the bb or bigger caliber to rip through more than that, so I am assuming a more powerful rifle is and/or maybe a bigger caliber?

Not sure what to get.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

David

Hello David, and welcome to our forum. I’ll second the idea of a Crosman 1322. A multi pump gun will be really versatile for you in choosing just the right power level. The .22 caliber pellets are also heavier than a bb so will penetrate better for your needs.
I am also a photographer by trade so it is interesting for me to read your post. The photo that you posted is really cool.

Thanks everyone.....

I use the Daisy 880 air pump rifle.

I usually pump it to 10 pumps, not sure anymore pumps will give me anymore power.

I am in Dallas, TX and I guess I could go and find some to rent/get on loan, that is certainly an option (I think).

I also want the bigger caliber to shoot through food/bigger items, LOL...... the bb just doesn't cut it and or if I shoot a 'fish bowl' of water the bb just doesn't rip through it as I would like.....

I realize this isn't your typical post, but I appreciate the advice.

Hello David, fellow photographer!

Put simply you are looking for more downrange energy. This does not necessarily mean larger caliber, but that could help as well.

Energy is velocity x weight. Increase either velocity or weight while maintaining the other, and energy goes up.

More pressure from your air gun equals more feet per second. (FPS) More FPS x weight of projectile = foot pounds of energy (FPE)

I would suggest that your next step up in power (a significant one) might be a break barrel air rifle. In .22 you would also be increasing the caliber. Look at the FPS (feet per second) ratings for these. A great source to both shop and compare specs is Pyramyd Air.

IF you want a larger leap and even more flexibility, an entry level PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) with adjustable velocity (pressure) might appeal. That also might be a lot more than what you want to get into.

Thank you CyberDynesystems! I will check out the Pyramyd air's..... Do you have a favorite?

I will check out the different FPS, etc.... I see some are 1350 fps.... :) that might do it....

Also, can anyone recommend a stand for the rifles?

Not sure I will get one, but it is helpful since I am shooting in the dark when I do this type of stuff, so having the rifle stationary makes life a little easier.

Caldwell makes a variety of rifle rests that would probably work: https://www.caldwellshooting.com/rests/ I use one of their Lead Sleds that is very sturdy metal unit but they also make lower cost plastic units that might work for your purposes. Keep an eye on Craigslist for rifle rests, people seem to sell them frequently. You might also be able to get by with one of their tack driver shooting bags.

I use my photo tripods! Some rifles can have an Arca plate attached to a picatinny rail. Some work better with clamp/ LeoFoto makes a superb rifle clamp with Arca plate already attached.
