Need a little Beeman R7 education

I'm in the market for a Beeman R7 and have a couple of people who may be interested in parting with theirs. One is an older rifle believed to be manufactured in 1998. This one has a Vortek tune and the Maccari cocking arm insert.

The other one was made sometime after the barrel was shortened and has a gold trigger. I don't think it has ever been modded or opened up.

I'm leaning toward the 1998 model as I think this was still the "original" style of R7. For some things related to airguns older may be desirable. I have the impression they were changed at some point to shorten the barrel, change the stock, and maybe some other things as well. But - I'm putting that together from snippets of info I find in the Pyramyd blogs and other places.

My question - when (and if) was the R7 redesigned? I'd also like some opinions (opening the box there I know) about the changes, their effect, etc. And, any other trivia or tidbits about the R7.

Thanks!

Don’t mean to demean the R7 but I have owned three of them and none of them would group good at 25 yards. One shot so bad I sent it back. I even put vortek kits in them and they still wouldn’t group. I tried lots of premium pellets With no improvement. I think it is the ball bearing barrel lock. I don’t think they got a consistent barrel lock up because the accuracy issues were vertical. Good luck. They are fun to shoot though.

I’m not familiar with the different models unfortunately. I can tell you that my HW30 is a newer model and it’s fantastic.

Question: Are they cheap enough to buy both? If that fits the budget, may be worth getting both, try them out and sell the one you like the least after a while.

*Updating with some thoughts on the HW30/R7. It’s one of my favorite rifles to use. It’s flat out fun, and accurate as all get out. I shot a House Fly at 15 yards. Groups very well at 50 yards, yes 50 yards! I routinely pest for chipmunks with mine and get headshots at just under 30 yards. Below find my thread on mine.

I Have a beautiful Santa Rosa R7 bought new in '87(a real pretty piece of beech). Still looks awesome and I still have the box w/ papers. A favorite shooter in our family! An HW30 from about 2015. And another more recent R7.

To me the earlier R7 with the palm swell and higher comb is best. I don't care for the HW30 or current R7 stock nearly as much. I like the palm swell for my big ape hands. I think a '98 model still has a similar stock. The only difference from my '87 might be a thicker barrel and sights.

You posted while I was writing. The laminates look nice. I hope you like it. My wife loves her R7

Well things have changed a bit...I was showing this thread to my wife and we followed intenseaty22's thread - uh oh. That laminate version is sure pretty alright. One thing led to another and Airguns of Arizona got an order for a new HW30S Laminate. So - no historic R7 headed to the house (yet).

AOA is dope. Good job and congrats. I only buy new.

intenseaty22 - that is a cool blind - pretty handy. I couldn't find it anywhere on the internet either.

My HW30S has fallen victim to the Coronavirus "everybody is buying airgun stuff now" thing. Backordered until possibly 7/2020 according to Rich at Airguns of Arizona. Looks like a lot of people are jumping into airguns which could be a good thing for the industry. Looks like I'll have to wait on it a while.
