N50 at 100 “In The Rings” Slug Challenge

Thanks guys!

Hoping to see more “in the rings” 100 yard slug challenge cards posted in the next couple of weeks. I have spent most of my recent range time in the last several months shooting the N50 cards at 50 yards; and the 100 yard slug challenge was a real wake up call for the Safari HP .22 air rifle.

Candidly, I was hoping that the Anschutz 1907 did well because I only shot that particular rifle one time at 100 yards and this was a good test / challenge. Like Mike, I would also like to see how other RF rifles do in this challenge, as well as other air rifles.

Such good shooting you guys! I’m really looking forward to trying this. I just got notification that my RedWolf is arriving tomorrow. I’ve got a scope all ready for it, and hopefully the weather will change soon. It’s been around zero degrees here with heavy wind. Ha ha I’m already making excuses for my first attempts. My first shooting is going to be at 50 yards at N50 targets, the 100 yard shooting is a ways off because my 100 yard target is way uphill and there’s snow over rockslide to get there! You can barely see my 50 yard target, it’s uphill and to the left of the group of four N50 targets which are at 35 yards from my shooting window.

Good shooting, Tommy.

I put a big dirt mound backstop behind my 50y stand because the steel trap I was using made too much noise. The mound is now in the way for me to do any 100y shooting in the old configuration. I’ll have to put another bench further back one of these days or figure something else out.

Mike

Thanks Mike! Sure wish I could score like this with an air rifle vs. a .22 LR but it’s not realistic for me either shooting .25g pellets or slugs. I truly wish there would be more posting their attempts at this 100 yard slug challenge, but life gets in the way understandably.

Did your neighbors complain about the noise from hitting steel, or were you just proactively making sure they don’t?

Hey guys, get a big heavy semi truck mud flap and hang it behind the target. It deadens the loud steel whack into a dull thud. My .30 pellets sometimes stick in it but nothing has gotten through it. You can see it behind the spinners, it works great. I also cut out mud flap starlings to hang at different ranges with log background to absorb the misses. I have to be quiet when I shoot sometimes if certain neighbors are out.

I had a 60y trench dug about 8 feet deep that I was hoping would give me some wind shelter for testing on days when it was windy ….but it doesn’t really work. If I put flags in it they just spin. Now I’m just going to put in a tunnel and bury it with a little shed at each end. The most economical option for the tunnel structure is 55 gallon drums with the bottoms cut out and welded together. It will be a longer term project. 😀

That looks good Dave! I can picture how that thick mud flap would deadened the sound pretty well.

I had to chuckle because I could picture my neighbors ( one on my right and the other on my left ) seeing this large mud flap hanging on a tree in my woods behind my back yard. “ What is Tom doing now in his yard?”

I could not get away with that where I live, it would surely be seen. It is a good idea though. 😀

Went out this morning, beautiful but very windy. We had storms and wind roll through yesterday and there was plenty of wind left over today. I know this is a "100 yard slugs in the rings" challenge, but due to wind, I set up at 50 yards and tried some regular N50 targets. I would have had a tough time at 100 yards today.

No air guns today ( too windy ) so I shot the Annie 1907 w/ tuner. I had two flags deployed and I am starting to figure out when NOT to shoot and slow down. The winds were ranging from 3-7 mph, gusting to 10+. My holds were pretty good and wind reading was better too, despite the whirling changes. I would not have picked up some of the changes if I did not have the far flag out this morning.

Good shooting, Tommy. Your first card is about 10x and your second around 13. In pro class with the .224 plug you only have to touch the dot. In pellet and sportsman with the big .350” plug you have to cover the dot.

Mike

Thanks Mike for clarifying. I did forget as you explained this to me in the past. Cards just got a little better. 👍

That’s really something to see, so many X’s at 50 yards in wind, with any rifle.

The whirling changes are what seem impossible to me. I need some directional arrow flags instead of just hanging tails. Sometimes the tails are obvious in a direction but usually they are whirling in an unreadable way and I just shoot through the wind. And that Mike can do the challenge with his air rifle at 100 yards is mind boggling, you too Tommy.
I always check the bench rest section and the over 100 yards section of the forum first to see the latest groups you guys are shooting. It’s been extremely windy here lately, but at the first chance I get I’ll try the challenge myself. What a great sport this is.

Dave - I got this link from Joe F. a while back. I have two of these flags and they are very helpful. Candidly, I still really don’t know what I’m doing while interpreting them, but I tell myself that I do. I am learning though and occasionally I get it right.

It is “mind boggling shooting that well at 100 yards with an air rifle.” I’m still trying to beat Mike N’s score ( slugs in rings 100 yard) with his Thomas air rifle and my custom Anschutz 1907 with a tuner, and I can’t do it. He is making us all work for it! 😃😃😃

Here is the link for the flags. PM me with any questions.
