Now that the weather is starting to break…I thought maybe some people would like to play something different as far as bench shooting goes.

The target used will be the N50 shot at 100y using slugs on air or 22LR if you like. Below is a printable portion of the N50 on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

http://national50.org/target/print-right-target-lg.pdf

The target will be scored ARA style. The outermost ring will be used to make all the scoring decisions. Each shot has the potential of 100 points. 5 shots must be placed on each of 5 consecutive record bulls for a total of 25 shots and a maximum score of 2500.

100 points - Bullet hole completely inside outer ring.

50 points - Bullet hole touching outer ring.

25 points- Bullet hole completely outside rings but not touching scoring box

0 points- Bullet hole touching scoring box or completely outside scoring box.

Add up your totals for each box…then add up all 5 boxes for total score.

Make sense?

Here is an example to get things going.

Looks good Mike.

Assume “no scoring plug” is used for this type of match as it would probably defeat the purpose since this is for fun. Also, can you shoot all five shots on each bull and then go to the next bull? Or, or do you have to shoot one shot at each bull in rotation?

Going to wait for a calm wind day and try it out. Should be fun.

I’m in! It’s a great idea, and in about 10 days I’ll have a RedWolf .22 HP to see how good I can do. This will be fun…and very frustrating lol!

Hey Dave

You are going to really like that .22 HP RW. It does shoot very well out of the box at both 50 and 100 yards as many owners will attest too.

Good luck and hoping the weather continues to cooperate.

I tried this N50 at 100 challenge a few days ago. Man oh man, it didn't go well, so much so that I'm not putting the pic in here, kinda windy so..... Crazy how a rifle can shoot so well one week then a few weeks later it doesn't. I got some tips from Mike I'll try in the next few weeks hopefully.

Got the holes dug for my new bench so at least I'm headed for getting a steady platform.

Went to the 100 yard range today. Had 2 Wicks flags deployed. Ver windy. I sucked at my first attempt at this new challenge.

If I feel brave, I may post tomorrow. I was very disappointed.

Have to gather my thoughts.

OK, scored my cards. I used the Red Wolf Safari .22 HP ( just cleaned barrel ) and with JSB 25g KO's.

I shot two rows; a 1275 and a 1300. The bottom rows on each card, and I did shoot a practice row and another row I 'forgot' to finish. Would not make a difference, very poor showing. I need to try this in a light wind day, and this was not the day. I could not get a handle on my holds, even though I did have both a near flag deployed and another flag around 75 yards. Interesting, on the GTA forum, I have shot some 50/50 3X and 4X cards before at 100 yards with the Red Wolf, but I could not hit anything today. I had one good bull with a 400 score, but everything else was awful. I like the challenge Mike, so I will try again to redeem myself.

There was a guy from Russia next to me with an AR-15 scratching his head and trying to figure out what I was doing. We made friends quickly, as he was very curious about air guns in general and we talked for about 30 minutes. He did not know Nicolai ( sp ), but I told him he is revered in the Bench Rest arena.

Thanks for posting Tommy. All in all, it’s just a lot tougher to get a high score on this….so I don’t think you did bad. To get a 500 on any box you have to be no further than about 1/2 moa from center for each shot….so basically 1 Moa centered.

Here is a little info about the design of the N50 card and it’s ties with other common BR cards.

The N50 10 ring is the same size as the WRABF 25m 9 ring.

The N50 X ring is the same size as the IR5050 and WRABF 50m X ring.

The Inside of the N50 10 ring is the same size as the outside of the IR5050 and WRABF 10 ring.

The inside of the N50 9 ring is the same size as the outside of the ARA 100 ring.

The N50 9 ring is very close to the RMAC/PA 10 ring.

The N50 6 ring is very close to the RMAC/PA 9 ring.

When I made the N50 card, I wanted it to be appropriately sized for 50y pellet shooting (easier) , but still wanted to be able to have ways to see how you would have scored on other popular cards. It’s worked out well so far for both.

The reason this is designated as a slug game on here is to try to hopefully introduce slug guys that typically only shoot groups to the scoring aspect of shooting and maybe get some more slug guys interested in N50. The N50 sportsman class is mostly dominated by Rimfire shooters at this time. If you read through this forum at all….you’ll see that there is an enormous number of guys that report to have slug guns reliably capable of 1 moa. All they need to do is learn to put their 1 moa groups in a specific location reliably to be competitive and start giving the Rimfire guys a run for their money.

Steve….if you get some time and some reasonable wind…I hope you can get your Anschutz and Surely out together.

Good info Mike on the background to developing the N50 targets and ring sizes.

Yes, I am going to shoot both Anschutz RF rifles at 100 yards and I’m trying for a 1-2 mph wind day; or better. I will post them here on this thread.

I have been shooting in low to mid 240’s with both the 64 MPR ( Sportsman Class) and the 1907 ( Pro Class) rifles at 50 yards.

It is fun and a heck of a challenge!

That’s what I was trying to do the other day. 😊😊

Good shooting at 100 yards Mike! Going to cherry pick a light wind day when I take the Anschutz .22 LR out and give them a go.

Assume you are shooting close to 40G slugs. I know you make your own.

I went to my local outdoor range this morning. Weather Channel said 5 mph wind, but when I got at my bench there was nothing noticeable. Flags were still, so I got out the Kestrel for about 5 minutes a few feet in front of my bench and it was 0-.5mph or no wind. I decided to go without flags, since I was shooting the 1907 Anschutz .22 LR today. Weather was perfect; 45 degrees when I started at 9:15 and 57 degrees when I finished at 11:25am. Have two more boxes of R50 40g ammo left, so I posted my "In the rings" SLUG challenge cards at 100 yards.

I shot three rows on the card, starting at the bottom and working my way up to the top row. Bottom and middle rows were shot with RWS50 and the top row shot with Eley Tenex ( red box).

IMG_5383.1645469745.jpg

Row 21 - I shoot from right to left and could not figure out how I missed the first two bulls with one shot out of the five shots for each target bull. I did figure it out on #'s 21, 22 and 23 bulls. Shot a 2250.

Row 11 - Next row was also with RWS 50 and this time I shot a 2450. Came close to a 2500, but on bull #13 my shot touched the outer ring. No complaints, very happy.

Row 1- This was the last row I shot today, and I switched and sighted in the Eley Tenex 40G. It did shoot well, but not as good as the RWS50. Shot a 2100 on this row.

The Anschutz 1907 (54 Action )is a custom .22 LR with my Tuner dialed in the way I like it. ( Pro Class ).

I will eventually get the other Anschutz .22 LR 64 MPR ( 64 Action - Sportsman Class, no Tuner ) and shoot it at 100 yards. It will not do as well, but I expect it will be decent.

Given my two Daystate Safari .22 HP first attempts ( 1275 and 1300 ), I am pretty sure I could not get this close with either that gun or the RAW HM1000x HP .22.

I have not shot either Anschutz at 100 yards for over a year, so this was the 'pick' day of the week with little/no wind present.
