My new HW30

First post here. Hello! I joined this site when I was researching what air rifle to buy. Lots of great information.

I chose a springer because I want to keep it simple and not be messing around with a bunch of extra equipment. The last thing I need is another gear-intensive hobby. I chose the HW30 because all of my shooting will be in my back yard, where the longest possible shot is 18 yards. I also need something quiet because I live in a densely populated urban area and I don't want my neighbors to hear me shooting. Most of my shooting will be paper targets and perhaps the occasional field mice and rats that visit my fruit trees.

Went with the Urban Pro package from Airguns of Arizona and couldn't be more pleased with the choice. What a fun little rifle, and accurate right out of the box. So far it likes H&N Sport 8.18 gr wadcutters. I've only tried a couple other pellets but they haven't worked out as well. I really wish there were more pellet samplers available. I know JSB and RWS each have one, and H&N has a couple. It's kind of irritating to buy a whole tin only to find they don't work out.

Congrats! I have the HW50 Hunter. Definitely look into the straight shooter sampler. Jsb and h&n both have samplers. Wadcutters are a great choice if your quarry is pest birds at 18 yards and they are made to shoot great at hw30 velocity. I would do the sampler and pick the pellet that lets you shoot them all in the same hole. Hardairmagazine.com has a video review of an hw30 Urban Hunter and they list what pellets worked the best for them but all barrels are different.

If your HW30 is anything like mine, you'll find out to 20 yards, every pellet is accurate out of it.

Try Straight Shooters, They have a sampler package of different brands.

Well, no. H&N Field Target Trophy are all over the place with mine. But I suspect it has more to do with them being 4.52 mm head size according to the sticker on the bottom of the tin. They are extremely difficult to load. I have to push them really hard and almost invariably the skirt gets damaged in the process, or they sit in the chamber a little bit crooked. Whereas the H&N Sport WC are 4.50 mm and it's easier to load them consistently.

The H&N Field Target pellet sampler has the FTT and Barracude Match in head sizes 4.50-4.51-4.52 so I'll probably try that and test my theory. Maybe mine has a tight barrel.

Thanks for the Straight Shooters sampler tip!

I'll check out that video. Thank you!

Tight virgin leade huh? Try the Crosman 7.4gr Pointeds (specifically). They tend to be a little SMALLER. They come in tins of 250 and 500. (NOT the 7.9 Premier SUPER POINTS which SUCK being way way way too oversized). Shop smart you may even find them for $1.99 or cheaper with 10% discount for 250 maybe even free shipping if you buy enough. Google could be your friend if you really care or want or need or are even forced to save money (OR NOT)

I would have recommended the Crosman Premier Hollowpoints 7.9gr CPHPs but they may fit tight in yours but they shoot great in other non tight HW barrels and CHEAP.

One of mine even liked the Beeman China made Hollowpoints that were $3.99 for 500.

CHEAP WORKS

GOOGLE WORKS IF YOU WANT TO SAVE A LOT OF MONEY CUMULATIVELY ON BUYING EVERYTHING IN LIFE SO YOU CAN LIVE COMFORTABLY IN LIFE IF YOU REALLY WANT TO (OR NOT)

Don't waste your money on a sampler. Just buy a couple tins of common pellets and you'll be set. The samplers are a huge waste in my opinion. Half the crap in there you will throw away, and you don't get enough of each pellet type to form an accurate assessment anyway.

Try these, in this order:

Crosman Premiers 7.9 grain in the cardboard box.

JSB Express or RS or Exacts

It will shoot one of those acceptably well. Haven't had a Weihrauch yet that wouldn't. H&N FTT sometimes do, but they aren't very consistent from tin to tin from what I've found. And don't put much faith in the head size on the tin. For that reason, I skip them entirely. Look at what Field Target shooters actually win trophies with, and it ain't those lol

Keep in mind with a springer, especially an untuned one, that consistency isn't guaranteed especially without a couple thousand rounds down the tube.

And clean the barrel between swapping pellet types, and shoot 30 shots or so before you form an opinion of them. I've found this to make a huge difference.

Keep the stock screws snug, and double check your scope or sights for snugness.

Have fun

I have an old tin of those. There's no weight indicated but when I put them on a scale they're ~7.4 gr. My first impression was that they didn't group as tight as the H&N Sport 8.14 gr but I'll take another closer look at them. Thanks!

Yes, it IS a great gun, got one from AoA about a month ago. I chrono'd some pellets and got the best fpe from 8.1 to 8.5gr and it has been shooting well with RWS 8.3 Superdomes. I read on this site a year or so ago that best power is where the spring and pellet weight are balanced. Sounded good to me. Haven't got groups like yours, but after a couple hundred rounds through it I can hit a 2" pipe cap at 33 yards standing in the back porch doorway 5 out of 6 times. That's good for another cuppa coffee. Have fun,

Congrats! I shot powder burners for years. I read that springers could teach better shooting techniques, so I ordered an HW30. 30 minutes after it arrived I knew I was hooked.

I now have my HW30, 2 Dianas, (these will be sold at some point, but have been a LOT of fun), 3 PCPs, and I just ordered a TX200. I found an airgun club to shoot with also. I hope you enjoy the sport as much as I do or even more. As a bonus, you can also make some great new friends. Enjoy it all.
