My first chrono?

Looking for some ideas. I’ve lasted this long without one, but now it’s time to bite the bullet and get one of the most important pieces of equipment an airgunner has. I’ve tried searching a bit, but I’d like some real person recommendations. I’d like something fairly portable, and I would rather not break the bank being the first one I purchase ( I don’t believe in buy once, cry once). I see a lot of good and bad about the fx, so I’d rather not spend $200 on something I might absolutely hate. I also need it to work on my springer (not magnum).
thanks all in advance!

i dunno, not alot of experience with them myself .. i got a 'caldwell' one on amazon becasue it fit the budget .. only drawback -9v battery .. but .. i found some rechargeable 9v batteries on ebay with the charger thingamabob hey hey lol ... i just tell myself im probably gonna wind up shooting the dam thing in the end so cant see spending too much lol ..

They come up for sale on AGN pretty regular at around $150.00 Can't shoot it as it is slides on the barrel and you can move it down as much as you like. I really like mine. Remember, " you get what you pay for"!!. I can put you on a friend of mine here in LA. who is an FX dealer who can probably save you $$ off retail. My buddies and I all purchased one from him

I hear the FX eats batteries although taking them out while not in use may help. Others that rely on light can be finicky Until you figure out the light they need to werq correctly.

I have one of the Shooting Chrony Beta units. I have had it for ten or fifteen years. It folds in half so has a small footprint for storage and goes in my range bag so I always have it. Easy to set up in a minute or two. When outdoors put it in the shade, or shade the sensors, and you don't need the diffusers. Indoors a couple of cheap Harbor Freight LED lights make it werq well. The 9V battery is said to last for 48 hours for me that is six months to a year. It is definitely old school tec though.

Gives numbered shot velocities.

Velocity stays on display until you shoot again.

Measures High, Low and Average Velocities,

Extreme Spread and Standard Deviations,

Retrieval of individual shot velocity measurements.

60-shot memory (divided into 6 numbered strings from 2 to 10 shot each, with one set of statistics for each string)

Can be switched off, taken home and switched on for reviewing, information retrieval or, (together with optional IBM Interface downloading onto your computer

Moves instantly from string to string, interrupts shooting on any string without memory loss, each string delivers its own statistics, etc.

Forget Button to clear individual string-memory instantly

Change string size

Delete individual shots, (with automatic adjustment of Statistics) or all data from memory

Stereo Jack also works with optional Ballistic Chrony Printer.

Three year limited warranty when returned to manufacturer.

I like the idea of the fx for portability reasons, but it’s priced so damn high. I had heard there were some Chinese versions of portable chrony’s that had some good reviews on here. Again, I couldn’t find any pertinent info in search, or I just really suck at searching......probably the latter. Anyway, thanks for all the replies. Some food for thought!

I like the units that don't attach to the barrel (like the Caldwell chronographs). For some reason having to attach it every time is annoying and it is much more natural for me to shoot through the Caldwell type. I just leave it set up In my garage range and my phone connects wirelessly super easy but not $26 either. Very reliable as long as your pellet passes through the "sweet spot"

I love the FX Chrony. After I got mine and used it for a short while, I sold my LabRadar unit. I didn't really need or use the down-range velocity features, so the big unit was not necessary.

Of course I attached some velcro straps to my FX unit which hold well as compared to the rubber bands. I also glued in a piece of bicycle inner-tube in the 'cradle' where it contacts the barrel, for a little more stability and to provide a scratch-free mating surface.

I have heard a few times that they really eat batteries, but I must have gotten a defective one as my useful battery life is very good. Little red light comes on (along with the green one), but still a lot of battery time left.

I really don't shoot springers much but when I was chrono'ing the ones I had, it was a pain (to me) to cock them with the FX chrony on the end of the barrel. So instead I would just put it onto my shooting table (centered, right next to the front bag) facing downrange, and that worked just fine.

Mine doesn't seem to miss too many shots, unless the velocity drops out of the programmed speed range. One thing I did not like is that if you have to change speed ranges during a string, you will lose that string. But I love the ability to quickly email the string to myself to have it saved before I make any adjustments to the unit.

I paid the full $200 for mine. Have seen them occasionally discounted by maybe as much as 10% during Black Friday sales. But I have gotten more than full value for that $200 I spent, and it is so easy and convenient to use that I now find myself using it all the time.

Caldwell G2 would be what I would go with. it can do powder burners as well!

Or?

More affordable option is Competition Electronics DLX

Both have Bluetooth connectivity, and they are decently accurate.

And unlike the over priced FX Chrony; they can be used on powder burners also. But keep in mind that the DLX would require the light kit if you want to shoot it indoors.
