My Filming Equipment

I have a question I created a thread about it called slow motion and sound but I'll ask you aswell.

I have taken the plunge into a scope cam set up. I have purchased a Casio Exilim ex-zr200 and a scope mount. I also have a Canon g7x.

I have quickly realized you can’t record sound when shooting over 30 frames per second with the Exilim.

My question is how do the big YouTube guys show slow-motion 240 fps video with sound?

My theroy is that they shoot in 30 fps and slow the footage down during editing to get the sound plus the pellet flight.

If this is the case then cost aside, why aren’t they using a camera like a Canon g7x that can shot full HD 60 fps in 1080p. (Also 4K but I’m not going to focus on that because I believe it only shoots 30 fps at 4K)

The footage would be higher quality with sound and the pellet flight would be smoother because you have twice as many fps to use in the editing process of slowing it down.

If I would have to sum up my post:

Are they recording using the exilim cameras at 30 fps to get sound and slowing down the footage with editing software to get the pellet flight?

Are they using the Exilim vs. Other cameras because they offer regular and high speed at an affordable price?

I would have to believe you would get better quality using a 60 fps full HD camera with sound and slowing that footage?

I understand that with the Exilim you do have the option to shoot in true high speed available; but if you also want sound your forced to shoot at 30 fps and slow it down in editing so what is the point.?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve danm thats a mouth full bud but very good question indeed. If you are willing to spend thousands of dollars you can pro like footage and audio. remember this is just our hobby.

so lets start - the casios can only record the footage in slow motion with NO audio. the reason for that is the capability of the camera is limited and space to record everything is also limited due to a limited processor in the camera. High end cameras are much bigger and bulky and have bigger processor and technology build into the to handle all these stuff together.

Most of the bigger cameras can only record 720 at 60fps with sound as the processor again are to small. with that said you can see what is happening here if you go up in FPS the resolutions of the video drop and your video will look terrible when you scale it up to full HD. 4K is more professional and you are going to spend an arm and a leg for a camera like that and then again i dont think it will be capable to record in slow motion in high resolution if they do you will sit with one BIG camera like this Sony's 4K-ready NEX-FS700 $3,999.00 body ONLY (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1010153-REG/sony_nex_fs700r_4k_nxcam_super_35mm.html)

this is the camera body alone with no lens or screen so you can just image where this is going to.

in my case i the the audio of the camera that is recording me and i slow it down and the synchronize it up with the video.

So to answer you questions:
Question:

My question is how do the big YouTube guys show slow-motion 240 fps video with sound?
Answer:
Yes and no, some of them do the same like i do, Record the sound on a separate device and slow it down and sync it up in post production. Others only the video with no sound as it is to mush of work to ad sound.

Question:
Are they recording using the exilim cameras at 30 fps to get sound and slowing down the footage with editing software to get the pellet flight?
Answer:
they might use a exilim but there are other brands as well capable of recording in 240fps. and nope you can not slow a video down that was recorded in 30fps as the are not enough frames to work with when you slow it down, when its recorded in more frames a second like 60 and up you have more frames to work with and you can slow the footage down more, also non of these compact cameras are capable of recording audio with slow motion footage.

Question:
Are they using the Exilim vs. Other cameras because they offer regular and high speed at an affordable price?
Answer:
In a way yes but still more High end cameras are much much bigger not to mention the price

Question:
I would have to believe you would get better quality using a 60 fps full HD camera with sound and slowing that footage?
Answer:
Absolutely BUT you can then ONLY slow the footage down that much as you are limited to 60 frames per second.

Question:
I understand that with the Exilim you do have the option to shoot in true high speed available; but if you also want sound your forced to shoot at 30 fps and slow it down in editing so what is the point.?
Answer:
Like i have mentioned before i record in 240fps and use the sound from my other camera and slow that down.

I really hope i helped you in a way and if there is still stuff that are unclear please ask i am willing to help you anyday

regards
Marno
