Events My EBR adventure 2019

Hopefully I don't bore anyone, or get the "damn Centercut posts too much", but I wanted to say that it was truly an epic weekend for me, from the drive from San Diego to Mesa AZ on Wednesday, to the drive home Monday morning...

I arrived Wednesday and stopped in at AoA first thing to register, and was greeted like an old friend, even though I was only there once before for EBR 2018. As I'm terrible with names, I was surprised that Robert, Darren, Rich and Loren all remembered my name (Mike) and not just Centercut. It was an easy sign up, and I talked about the new AAA Evol with Robert for about 15 minutes, plus said hello to others I knew from last year that I competed with like Dave Corder.

Arrived at Rio Salado Thursday morning, practiced some and checked sight in on my .22 EDgun R3 Long before heading over to the AFT range, where I shot 28/40, not great but better than the 21 that I shot last year, and this year the course was harder. I was interviewed by the American Airgunner staff for about ten minutes on my way off the course, that was kinda cool. I also met up with Carl (@oregun) and Dave (@dwilson050) at the small bore range. Both of them had been asking me about EBR for a couple of months, and I was providing the limited experience I had from last year. I also brought an extra gun (.22 FX Crown) and 88 cu ft SCBA tank for them to use for the weekend since they flew in from Oregon. We ended up hanging out most of the weekend along with my roommates Bill (@crusher), James (@masterho) and Brian (@brian10956). Always great to make new friends... The AoA staff at the AFT range were all super friendly and helpful...

Friday we shot 50 Yard BR in the morning, and the first 75 yard qualifier in the afternoon. Morning winds were RIDICULOUS, gust over 35 MPH, kinda hard to hit those little targets at 50 yards, don't know how some of the shooters did it, because I certainly didn't. The wind died down quite a bit for the afternoon's 75 yard qualifier and I finished 2nd in the first relay. Scoring was done quickly by the AoA staff, and just as importantly, very fair in all respects.

The second 75 yard qualifier was shot Saturday morning, followed by the Speed Silo, which is a super fun event, lots of excitement. I kinda lost my concentration in the 75 yard qualifier, and shot 8 points less than my first card in much easier conditions. It was pretty bad, and for a while I was wondering if I even qualified for the finals Sunday. In the Speed Silo I did well and qualified, but was about 5 seconds behind the #1 and #2 qualifiers. Although I knew that the top ten would go to the Sunday morning finals, so I didn't really "put the hammer down" Saturday afternoon... Jared from AoA did a great job keeping things moving along in Speed Silo, and somehow is always so cheerful even when I know he has pressure on him to keep things moving along.

Sunday morning was game time, and I started off with Sportsman Class Speed Silo. We ran a practice run first, and I fumble farted around loading my mags and also missed a few targets, resulting in a 3rd or 4th place finish. But it was only practice. Right before we started the final, I kinda let it all out, relaxed and felt like I was there by myself, just me, my Cricket mini and the targets. My buddy Bill (@crusher) told me to relax, and think smooth... He told me "Slow is Smooth, and Smooth is Fast". KenPo stuff I think, but it worked. We started and my mag load went well, and I just ignored the pellets that went in backwards (3 of them) and let'r'rip. I shot a time a full 7 seconds faster than my best qualification time and won by 3 seconds. In the back of my mind I was listening for a number to be called (as you finish and hit the stop button the announcer calls out your bench number, which in my case was 13), so when I heard "13" before hearing any other number, I knew that I had won. Steve from AEAC interviewed me and noted how badly my hands were shaking from the adrenaline overload.

And then it was on to the 100 yard final. I was still pumped from Speed Silo, and it all seemed a bit surreal when I set up the Cat on bench #10. The wind was pretty mild, but it was a little tricky. I just tried to shoot when I knew conditions were good and put all but 4 in the red, nothing worse than a 7. I scope scored my target at 215-4x but ended up with a true score of 217-4x which was good enough to win Sportsman Class. I was so stoked, two wins in one day!

Last but not least I want to thank Robert Buchanan and his AoA staff, who are always friendly and helpful, more so than any other tournament I've been to in the past year. I can't remember all the names but Jared, Darren, Rich, Lauren, Chuck, and everyone else I know how hard you all worked and what long hours you all put in. You were there when I arrived and you were there when I left - every day. Bravo!!!
OMG!!! I forgot. Daystate ROCKS for their awesome first place prize! Thank you so much.

Great seeing you again Mike, you kicked butt. I wouldn't have known you were wound up before the event as you were like ice before speed silhouette. Thanks for chatting and telling me works for you in loading and such with mags, sharing info 👍. I thought for 200 people AOA did a amazing job and kept things moving right along and organized, their staff are top notch. And while I'm typing, the generosity of people astounds me. Only the ones there know Joe Rhea gave his cherished FWB 300 to a young shooter asking what would be a good rifle for 4H events. Only to out do himself at the raffle by giving a Brocock Commander he won to a young shooter he saw putting all his tickets in the bin for that gun(Joe is a stud). Shooting is a blast, winning is great but the people are the best👍

See you all next event.
