Mutant Standard with FatBoy LDC

I put my Weihrauch LDC onto the end cap adapter instead of the FatBoy, and believe it or not, the Weihrauch is quieter! That was unexpected as the FatBoy has more volume, but I think the baffles on the FatBoy could do with some switching around so the small space is in the middle with large spaces at each end the same as the baffle spacing on the Weihrauch LDC..

When I was buying an LDC from Neil Clague he told me that using a shorter but larger diameter LDC design only works well on some air guns but not on others. The only way to determine which it would work on was trial and error.

Intuitively, an LDC that works well on one 35fpe 22 cal would work well on another but apparently not.

I was surprised at how well the $80 WildWest shroud extension worked on my Ataman. It's the same one they sell for the Mutant and Jkhan etc (with different end caps to match the threads on each shroud). It's just a thin tube and the baffles are just cut down pieces of tube but, for some reason, it just works. I think it has something to do with the effect of adding a narrower tube to a larger diameter shroud. It has the effect of forcing some of the expanded air back to the rear vent holes.

I can't imagine what my Mutant would sound like with an additional LDC. It's so quiet now. When people say the pellet impact is louder than the shot, I rarely believe it but this is the only air gun it has ever been true for with me.

Zebra, adding an LDC to a mutant seems counterintuitive as the stock gun is pretty quiet, but it really is quieter. The FatBoy is pretty good (likely because the sound is already fairly quiet and the air blast is slowed down enough before it enters the FatBoy and therefore it has less to do) However, the Weihrauch is quieter still. It is sinister quiet!!! I wish I had a db meter to demonstrate it as I would post some results.

I doubt a sound meter could really show the actual difference in how it sounds.

In my (limited) experience of messing with sound meters, what I am hearing never seems to marry up with the readings. Sometimes an LDC seems to make a huge difference but the sound meter shows minimal change. Other times the sound meter reading is a good bit lower but you can't hear the difference....

I think a lot of how we perceive noise is the pitch instead of the actual volume. Changing the noise from a threatening bang to a non-alarming ping, puff or psstttt makes shooting a lot more comfortable than dropping a bang to a bang that is 10db lower.

Function over beauty. I too love a good looking airgun, or firearm just like most people. That said, I realize this thing isn't the most beautiful gun ever I agree. It just flat out works though. No one who tries one, and sees for themselves will say otherwise. Is it tough to see beyond the fugly? Maybe for some.... That said, there is not much that can beat it for performance, power, shotcount, trigger, machining. Mine has been an absolute hammer. It takes squirrels, rabbits with no mercy or drama, and can put a magazine full (12 shots) of pellets into less than 1/2" at 50 yards all day long. It's a bullpup, now if this manufacturer was to put this same technology into a regular shaped/length sporter/hunter style rifle, it would piss rings round almost anything out there, I can say that with confidence.

Well stated I completely agree!
