Murmuration Mayhem

Went back to the dairy last night 1-11-19 and shot 100 starlings, it was really cold 27 degrees and I only stayed an hour and half. The shooting itself is monotonous because there is no challenge, no shots further than 15 yards, the bulk at 10 yards. A few double and triples depending on how I line up the shots. So far over 340 starlings in 3 visits, I went back today at dusk to see if the starling murmuration looked smaller and it seemed so though I couldn’t tell for sure. I asked one of the workers there if he notice a difference, he said he did, but I’m not sure. I shot over 60 more tonight 1-12-19, the best shots (only 7), were off the ridge line of a roof at 30 yards. I was head shooting them with Crosman HP from Walmart. After dark I went to work on the roosting starlings. At some point I stopped counting as it really is an elimination, misses are rare and every shot drops a starling. So I’m at over 400 starlings for 4 visits and am going to speak to the owner to see if I’m really doing them a service. I’m feeling a little conflicted, I’ve killed more pest birds in 4 nights than in my entire life of pesting. I’ve attached a few photos of the building I’m shooting under and a photo of the entire property from goggle maps. The circled building is where I’m doing the bulk of the shooting, the arrow points to a lower building where I’ve been taking them off the peak of the roof when they land. At some point I will have to employ my Beeman P1 in that lower building. Once I get to know the owners well, I intend to asked if they would allow other, responsible air gun shooters to join in the mix as they have more rats and pests than I could ever handle.

Dang. Where are you? I'd help.

If you killed 400 and can't tell if you made much of a dent......there are probably a couple thousand.

Keep at it though. I hammered the ones here for a year and there are maybe a few hundred left.

New York....crap....too far.

Bob it would be a privilege to shoot with you, thanks for the kind words. I want to get to a point where I can concentrate on the rats, bidding my time until Spring. Want to evolve a set up to hammer the rats come summer. I have absolutely no qualms about killing rats, I thoroughly enjoy shooting them.

I understand what you mean when it seems monotonous. I have been clearing out barns here at the dairy I work on at night also. I show up right when they take the cows out to milk and blast them for about an hour. I usually shoot a tin of 200 of the GTO through my streamline and then go pick up and go home and do it again the next night. I have shot over 8 tins so far and not missed very many. Around 1600 have been taken out and piled up for my buddy to attract coyotes to shoot.

There are around 10 barns on the place and I have got them pushed out of all but one now. It seems that when I leave a few up in the rafters they don’t come back into that barn again. The barns are 800 ft long so I try and head shoot most of them but then every 50 ft or so I will body shoot a couple so that they stay put and act as a deterrent. The workers have sure been glad to not have to go get absolutely covered in poop as they go to get the cows now. The cows enjoy not eating E.Coli laden poop in their feed as well. Keep up the good work and let them have it!! We would just poison them but the one year we tried that there were a lot of Hawks and Bald Eagles that came in to clean up the carcasses and got residual effects from the poison.

One of the more satisfying times was the other night as they were coming in to roost, I picked off a few from the peak of the barn and the others just hovered there midair not daring to go past the dead ones. I was able to pick a few more off while they were just hovering there. That was fun and made me think I am a better shot than I really am!

@TylerE., thanks for your insights... I do intend to keep at it, but really enjoy shooting them in daylight! Shot about 20 birds today, 1 pigeon at 50 yards off the tall barns roof. Many house sparrows and a few starlings at 30 and 40 yards off the peak of the shorter building. Way less shooting than at night, but I enjoyed it much, much more, I love the challenge of the longer shots. The Aztec Emerald FFP is awesome, clear and uncluttered reticle and fast to use. Being able to see the critters at 25x makes my shots that much sweeter. I can see and hear the impacts. The sparrows took it hard today.
