Moving on from Impact to Uragan...

Quick and dirty... I traded away an Impact .30, picked up a Uragan 22, and I might really enjoy where it takes me!! Read on if you are curious about my reasons and comparisons...

I finally moved on from my Impact MKII .30. I owned it longer than any other rifle the two years I've been into air rifles. I never had a single issue with it. Ken Hicks must have done some great work in setting it up, because I never experienced any of the problems some people have. I picked it up as my second Impact, because it was too good of a deal to pass up at the time. I have considered trying another rifle, but I was so happy with the Impact, that I had no reason too. The feel, accuracy, and quality have been perfect for me. My wife is shocked that I traded it. With more time to spend shooting due to the effects of the virus on the economy, and Michaels fun weekly targets coming up, I started shooting a lot more. The .30 pellets never seemed so expensive when I was shooting 50-100 at a sitting, but shooting 1-2 cans per sitting every other day, it starts getting expensive. I decided it might be a good time to find a good trade partner and pick up a 22 or 177, so I can shoot a little more cost effectively and keep shooting a lot.

In comes the offer for an Uragan. This was one of the few rifles that I have wanted to try out, and knowing that it was tuned by a fellow trustworthy AGNer, I had to make the trade work out. We came to an agreement that I think we both liked, and now I'm shooting some cheaper pellets and don't need to refill my tank near as often!!! 34-40 shots versus over 100 is a nice change!

I think we have all seen some pretty good reviews of the Uragan and the only worry seems to sometimes be the factory regulator. It may not be as quick and easy to tune by moving a couple knobs, but it can obviously be tuned to perfection if you know what you are doing. Sure it needs to be taken apart to adjust equally, but it can still happen. As it came to me, the first 41 shots of 18gr JSBs had an ES of 6, and a SD of 1.2! How is that possible?? Dang!!!! You have some skills sir. While you didn't do the work for me, but for the last guy, I still appreciate your work!

The package came in and I ran outside (didn't really care that it was a windy day) and had to get some shots in before the rain came. Got the scope mounted and sighted in, wind was howling and it was immediate how much the wind moves a 22 more than a 30 at even 50 yards, so I put it aside and grabbed my other new rifle (another story for another day) and sighted it in. The wind started to die down, so I went back to the Uragan. All 5 of the 5-shot groups I quickly took were inside of 0.5" with one being 0.175 and two more under 0.25. That was the first day sitting down with the rifle trying to hurry before the rain came! I think I am going to be extremely happy with this rifle. I was starting to shoot a lot at 100 yards with my Impact before the trade, and while I think the 18gr pellets are at a disadvantage, I can't wait to see what it can do out to 100yds.

Overview (my very early comparisons):

  • Looks - Tie. To each their own, but I really like the looks of both. Hard to choose one over the other.
  • Size - Tie. I don't know the exact specs, but they are close enough for me. Length and weight are fairly close it seems.
  • Adjustability to the shooter - Impact. Would be a tie in base form, but the Impact does have accessories that allowed me to adjust it to me (stock, cheek, bipod rail). Hopefully, some new rings and will help my fitment to the Uragan.
  • Tunability - Tie. I would have definitely said the Impact had I not received a perfected tuned rifle. It may take a little more work to open it up and get it right, but even my Impact didn't have a single digit ES. And it may be a good thing having to work a little harder to tune an Uragan. Having all those available knobs gets a lot of people in trouble! You have seen the posts here.
  • Accuracy - TBD. Right out the gate, having two rifles tuned by very good tuners, they are both very accurate. I have much more time with the Impact, so it wouldn't be fair to give this to either. I have come close to outshooting my 22lr a couple of times with my Impact, and the 22lr was a winner. Both can be sub MOA at 50 in my quick test of the Uragan. I will get it out more soon to really compare. Until I shoot some of my 50 yard paper games for a good comparison, I couldn't say. Groups aren't a real comparison. The real test will be after 50.
  • Mechanics - Impact. The side cocking lever is better on the Impact. The Uragan feels a little clunky, but not bad, just not as smooth. I personally like the trigger better on the Impact (at least for now, but maybe it is because I am much more familiar with it). I didn't like the Impact at first, as it is much different than my previous rifles, but it grew on me. I do not dislike the Uragan either. They are just different.
  • Magazine - Impact. I only say that due to the number of pellets it holds. The Uragan is simpler and faster to load, but they are both easy to load.
  • Cost - Huge win for the Uragan. Obviously it starts several hundred less than the Impact, and if the accuracy really is as good as it seems in my very limited test, and I can get comfortable with the setup, the Value will be even greater to me. I was able to use some of the proceeds to help buy another rifle. What is not to like about 1.3 rifles versus 1?
  • Overall - Too early to tell. Come on guys!! The Uragan has been shot less maybe 100 rounds. But, I will say that the Uragan definitely looks like it might come out of this the winner if the accruacy can hold up in the wind. That is as much the pellet as it is the rifle, but that is part of what my particular comparison is about. I am moving calibers and rifles. Can I be as happy with the 22 Uragan as I was with the 30 Impact? We will find out!

I know it doesn't count if you don't have pictures, but I forgot to take pictures that day. I took my scope off, and sold it to buy several more scopes. Now I am waiting on my new scopes to arrive, so I can get back out there. I really wanted to wait until I had some new pics, but I couldn't wait to share any longer. I'll get some more pics up as I get to shoot it some more. There aren't many articles up on the Uragan, so I wanted to be sure to share. Thanks!

The second rifle obviously isn’t the Impact and I’ll review it later when I get a real scope.

Nice. I just recently changed from a 0.22 Impact to a Uragan. As you say, there are a couple of things the impact does a better, se the uragan and some ties.

But that said, accuracy and consistency the uragan wins by knockout, in my samples at least. My uragan also has around 6fps extreme spread, and it is actually pretty easy to get this consistency at every tune I've played with. Just balance the hammer to the reg and voila!

It's also FAR more forgiving to various tunes than the fx, showing great accuracy at most velocities I've tried. I'm also enjoying it's reduced/less critical hold sensitivity.

What speed is yours sending the 18gr jsb's?

Sounds like you're found your ideal airgun. Congrats.

PS: I endeavor to try them all.

Not sure about that yet. Definitely not perfect. I think the Uragan is winning solely based on cost without any yet found downsides. In my particular case, cost is currently the deciding factor, so is giving it an edge.
That Pulsar HP 177 is waiting her turn too!

It was tuned for around 930. That string I referenced averaged 928.

The hold sensitivity is one thing I’m looking forward to figuring out. That small sample size led me to believe that it was NOT very sensitive, as the rings were too high for my liking. My only rings were 1.5”, so that needs to come down to make it more comfortable. That was perfect for my Impact and adjustable cheek piece, but is too high for my liking on the Uragan. I was testing out different grip positions the entire time as well. The grip will take some getting used to as well, going from picking out an AR grip that fits, to taking what I get with the stock thumbhole grip. Even with trying to get used to a very different feel, it shot really well. Just need for my scope and rings to arrive to get back out there.

I picked up some more pellets from PA today with their sale and got many more 22 than I could have of 30, so pretty happy about that too!

I luv my .177 cals.

Living in a subdivision, neighbors are better neighbors when I use the .177 cal as opposed to the .25 cal.

I look forward to your reviews of the Uragan and the Pulsar.

PS: The FX Impact is like...Airgun royalty in my book. ♠️

I too am looking forward to the 177! The Impact is definitely love or hate it. I loved the second one and didn’t care for the first one. I never had a single issue, so that helped. I am looking forward to trying new rifles again.

Nice downgrade!

jk I almost got the uragan before I picked up my .30 Impact, reason I chose the Impact is mainly, dual bottle, slug liners and more aftermarket parts and more of a collective technical knowledge pool.

Like others have said, seems like most the issues you had with the Impact could've been solved with a barrel change. Only upgrade I can see for my 30IMP is a semi auto something.

Question, why didn’t you just buy the .177 Or .22 barrel set?

Great question and I seriously considered it. I would have then also been putting over $500 more into a gun that I would never get back out of it. It was the perfect time to try a new rifle and see if I could be as happy with a less expensive rifle. I also wanted to have a couple different rifles that I could shoot and mix it up, or have others be able to shoot with me. Just adding barrels doesn’t accomplish that goal either. And who doesn’t want to keep trying new stuff?

Awesome 😄
Yah it seems very happy between 920 and 940 in my experience. I'll likely put it back there unless I find a significant sound and shot count advantage with the same accuracy at 880-900 fps.

Yes, you'll find its less hold sensitive for sure - the grip and butt stock are properly connected and don't torque on components like the barrel and plenum when gripped tightly like the impact - I suspect that makes the difference.

It goes well with medium to low rings I find. I also had to do some serious scope and ring swapping among my guns to get it right.

This is my lockdown experimentation gun for the moment. No reason to mess with it other than discovery. I did find the cz barrel shoots 25gr jsb very very well at 820, then above 860 all the way to the mid 900's. The 16gr shoot great with the reg set down, giving loads of shots.

As far as calling it a 'downgrade' - I don't know? It's shot cycle is as refined as my impact and it's performance metrics are better. It's trigger is different in feel but no worse than the impacts - both are only 'pseudo' 2 stage units. It's very well engineered and solidly built/very well machined. It's absolutely fine tunable and getting to the reg isn't impact easy but it's about as quick as the leshiy for reference. If you put in a huma then it's a simple act of degassing and adjusting through a hole with a flat head screwdriver, without disassembly. Once set, the settings stay locked in better than my impact's did. Sure, you can't change around liners but you gain a rigid, very very good barrel that shoots a number of projectiles very well with no POI shifts, ever. There will probably be a few slugs that shoot well too, they just might be a bit more work to find.

I think it's more personal preference about what features/characteristics you value more than one being a clear upgrade or downgrade. As far as pricing goes I'm pretty sure the manufacturing and labour costs in Sweden vs Czech Republic account for quite a bit of the difference.

I also had no leaks or other significant issues with my impact. It's a great gun and I enjoyed it. Wasn't anything terribly special to me though- that soft spot in their hearts many here have for FX belongs to Daystate for me 🤷‍♂️ Out of the FX stable my favourite has to be the crown. Hopefully they make a crown 2 with a bigger plenum etc. Anyways it was time for me to try something new and it's been great fun learning the uragan, at least in part because there isn't a huge database of information on it.

Enjoy yours. Hope it's as good as mine one you've acclimated to it.

NICE GUNS! Doess that LDC come with the Uragan? How quiet is it straight out of the box without any added on LDC? YO!

That is a DonnyFL Sumo. I might be the worst person to ask about sound. I don’t think most mods change the sound drastically between options in my history.
The Donny does not make it silent by any means, but does change the tone a little. I only shot 5 shots with and without when it arrived (still no scope). The gun was not very loud as is. Many people have said backyard friendly with no addons. I think I was expecting a bit quieter, but it is not bad either. I could have stayed stock and been happy. I also liked the idea of a moderator, so I could more easily put the FX chrony in the end. It is hanging by a thread with no mod.

Sticking with the spirit of this thread for comparison, I shot the Impact with only the shroud a couple times to see how much the baffles helped. Without the shroud, it was VERY loud. I was shocked how loud it was. Adding the baffles or moderator quieted it down a lot, but I don’t think it was ever meant to be shot without at least the baffles. The Uragan is quieter than the Impact with baffles, but it is not massive in my mind. Probably, because the sound isn’t a big deal for me either. I would say the Sumo helped about as much as any of the moderators helped the Impact when replacing the stock baffles.

Thanks for your further thoughts. Good to hear on the rings. I put a scope on the rifle and measured with sheets of paper to simulate the rings to find a more comfortable fit for me, and then measure the paper stack. I agree with you (as far as that test went). I think around 1” rings (medium) should be about right.

I have one small tin of Redesigned, and shot one mag that first day and I think the speed was around that 820 range you mentioned. They were all hitting very tight as well, so I might try them out at some point, but that does seem awfully slow for them. I will shoot the 18gr for a while and figure out the rifle first. I haven’t seen a lot on slugs, but I may look into that later as well, once I am comfortable enough with it to put it in the hunting rotation. I say that Dairy said his liked the 17 & 20 NSAs.

I don’t consider it at downgrade either. That is one thing I really liked. It has seemed to work great for people, so I was able to save money and spend it elsewhere. I agree that the two are different, but haven’t been good/bad different.

Thanks!

Thank you sir. I haven’t offered many of these takes up, so I thought I was due.

I took it out yesterday again. I wasn’t sure it was going to be as accurate as the Impact, but it was a laser yesterday! I started and had planned on posting a pick of the 6x5 target, but it was eventually used for a sighter target as the day went on. I couldn’t believe how well it grouped consistently. It would have been my best 6x5 target for sure. It probably would have been better than all but two 22lr cards I’ve shot.

I ended up shooting a local paper target we play with 22lr, and besides the Vudoo that dominates, I was able to beat those guys. This is what I was hoping for when I traded for it. It is amazing what a good tuner can do.

Very nice!!

The serious 22LR guys at my club treated me like garbage when they found out my Impact was an air rifle. When I told them how tight it grouped, they rolled their eyes. Then they laughed when they spotted the Nightforce scope on it.

When I told them I was going to shoot it at 200yds, they walked away chuckling. No way could it shoot better than their $5k plus rifles right?

If it wasn't on scope cam you might not believe it, but I shot a 0.74" 3-shot group (my first three shots of the day, I zeroed it at 200 a couple days prior to this) at 200yds right in front of the main snob.....he was watching through a spotting scope. He called his buddies over to look through his scope, and after that they starting kissing up and now you'd think they are my best friends.
