Most slugs are a waste of money because you did not slug your barrel

Today was a pretty long day of powder coating, slugging, and picture taking. I have 40 pictures of the entire process. I intend on creating a post dedicated to powder coating 101. It will be very detailed and picture heavy. Hopefully guys will take the time to read it in it's entirety. 

The beautiful thing is..... I have PROOF that powder coated slugs seal in the grooves, and that non powder coated slugs do not! You will also see that the non coated slugs can sometimes seat slightly canted in the barrel. This induces wobble right off the bat. If the diameter of the slug is slightly larger than the diameter of the groove, then it's not possible for the slug to cant inside of the barrel. It stays true through the entire length. 

It's going to be a good write up. It will be very informative and educational.

Hey RC, I slugged my barrel but all got was bloody knuckles??? What did I do wrong????

Any tips for reducing the choke in a tightly choked barrel, as opposed to cutting it off and recrowning?

The best powder coating kits start with whip cream containers, mesh baskets from the dollar store, and a toaster oven from Goodwill. Amazon boxes do come in handy if you flatten them though.

best powder I have found is smokes powder tested for the shake and bake method.

Smoke definitely has good powder. Most tigc polyester powder gives the best one coat coverage in my experience.

If you take a.216 - .217 slug and push it with a rod trugh a FX liner, there is a big chance you will see gaps of light (when using a flashlight) between the lands and slug. That gap usually disappear when it enters the choke. That slug can still shoot good. But if it gets to loose the choke will not "fix" it.

Also, what slugs you using to test your liners with push in halfway and -out?
The .25 NSA 38.5 gn for example is flat base and slightly larger diameter (you can feel the resistance when you try to push it in ), vs ZAN 37gn which have a cup base = it has a slight "skirt" that will expand from a shot blast.
I have slugged some of my Superior and S Heavy liners with both of these, straight from the box without any lube, and when I inspected the rubbing faces with a microscope only the larger diameter NSA show a shiny face but not the ZAN. The ZANs returned the original OD only.
