That is kind of a trick question, there are some homebuilt units but actual night scopes I'm going to say Sightmark Photon Or One of the old gen ATN scopes

You are looking at about $400 to 500 dollars

I was looking at the Firefield 3×42 NV a while ago.  Around $300 and it seems to have gotten good reviews.  It is only 3x though…

Price is not always cost?   I'd be more interested in knowing what you end up buying after you fine the cheap ones aren't worth fooling with.    Rather buy it right the first time.

What would you recommend?   You fellows who have experience  with this stuff.

I have a home built near eye unit and a Photon XT. I would say that they are comparable to each other as far as image and range with the right illuminator. The home built will run 12+ hours on 2 18650 Panasonic batteries. The Photon will run about 2-3 hours on 2 AA batteries. The home built can be used on any scope without rezeroing. The Photon is a dedicated NV scope for 1 gun, unless you can write down or remember the X & Y settings for the different guns. I can record with both but need a DVR to do so. To be honest, I use the home built more than I use the Photon due to its interchangability and battery life. You can view the results from the home built on talonairgunforum  in the hunting section. Look for Barn Rats 2018. Keep in mind the actual image is way better than the recorded version.

Take a look at nightvisionforumuk . That's where I learned to build them. It's not as hard as you might think. If you can solder and use a multimeter, you can build one. Search bullseyeft there for my builds with a parts list.
