Morning Quail hunt

I headed out this morning intending to take care of the last ground squirrel in my neighborhood. With that in mind I carried my trusty .22 Marauder, binos and rangefinder along with a pair of homemade shooting sticks. As I rounded a bend I caught sight of a large covey of Quail all lined up on log about 50 yards away.

Keeping my fingers crossed that they wouldn't spook I got settled and ranged them at 49 yards. I took the first with head shot and about 40 birds took wing and disappeared into the brush. I could hear more birds calling so I waited a few minutes (or maybe longer as time goes faster when you're hunting somehow) and was rewarded with two more birds taken off the same log.

After picking up my bounty I figured I'd see about that squirrel. He dove for cover when he saw me so I set up and waited for him to show. meanwhile another group of birds popped out of the brush and I got one more. At that point I figured I'd leave the squirrel for another day and headed home to clean my birds. Wonder what's for dinner?

"JohnL57"Smaug,
The Marauder has the stock barrel, the previous owner detuned it for FT, it makes 22 ft lbs. with JSB 18.1s. I like it so much I bought a nicer stock for it. It's a keeper even if a bit heavy.
AJ,
Thanks, I'm lucky enough to live and work there and walk the property several times a day with my dog.
He must've been shooting different pellets or something, because FT limits in the US is 20 FPE, and the world standard is 12 FPE...

Yes, he was shooting lighter pellets, I went with the 18.1s because they shot the tightest groups in my pellet tests. It's also possible the tune settings have drifted a bit over several thousand shots, I've heard of that happening. I've only recently got a chrony and haven't tested the #s on that gun in a while.....

Well done.

My boys and I went quail hunting on opening day. Got 8 birds with .20ga shotguns. We ran into 4 coveys with 20+ birds.

I'm pretty sure that we'd have gotten more birds had we brought the airguns. We spotted each covey at about 15-20 yards and the birds stayed on the ground until we were on top of them.

Next outing I will bring the .22 Marauder.

Nice thing about the airguns is that even on a body shot there's only one hole through the meat. It's not that often that I see a covey in the open, it's threading the needle in close when they're in the brush piles, I sometimes have to be part snake to retrieve the shot birds. Too bad my border collie is afraid of airguns, I may just see if I can train him to do the brush work!
Good on you for taking your kids hunting, way to go, Dad!
