Moderator removal

Daystate RedWolf. I’d like to clean the barrel. I usually remove the moderator. It’s a huggett . I do not recall if I ever removed it likely I have not. ITS ON THERE TIGHT. Any tips on removing I’m no strong man but I’ve applied about as much force as I can with the gun between my legs and two hands on the moderator twisting. Can’t budge it. Heat and tools concern me BUT. Maybe it’s not to be removed. Any help appreciated

( I could just ask my wife to twist it off but if I can avoid the embarrassment of that I’d like to)

Careful, the adapter in the shroud that the mod is screwed onto is also lock tighted to the CF tube. If nothing else, hold that adapter with some padded pliers when trying to break the locktight holding the mod to the adapter. Leaving it be and using the poke and seek (or straw) feed method is slower but fool proofe.

Edit, i was obviously late but.....

Glad you got it.

This may not be relevant, but I'll mention it. I recently removed the glued-on suppressor on my HW100. I used a propane torch, took quite a bit of heat, but get that sucker hot enough and it'll come right off. But, I was dealing with good ol' German steel, and I could probably have gotten it red hot without damage. ;I've never found that a hair dryer generated enough heat. I'm not sure if your adapter, or the moderator end piece is steel. I know the shroud is a carbon fiber material, so extreme heat might be an issue there. You don't want to end up with a pool of goo that used to be your shroud! I have a Red Wolf also, but I bought it without a silencer, so I dodged this issue. But, you might be better off to simply remove the shroud, then the barrel, and clean it separately. That would also give you the option of a good brush cleaning, and/or a JB polishing if you are so inclined. With the barrel removed, you can also easily remove the breech O ring, which I usually do when cleaning with a rod and brush. Just my opinion, and my wife says I'm always wrong.

Couple things. First I understand about the wife. Mine lets be suffer without comment. Just as bad.

I used a heat gun which is way hotter then a hair dryer and not nearly as hot as any type of FIRE source. If you are tempted to apply FIRE you better go ask your wives for help. ( oh forget it if you’re that stupid she’s already given up on ya 😀

The huggett came off easily but it’s not threaded and probably not to be removed routinely. Friction press fit. I pushed it back on and it’s as tight as it was

The barrel is easy to remove by backing your two set screws and in the future I will just do that and place a straw down thru as YO suggested.

The carbon fiber shroud is also very tight and I see no reason to attempt to remove the shroud. There are two set screws on the back of the shroud. I removed them and made some effort to move the shroud. It did not move easily so seeing no need I left it alone.

Boy you just never know. I put the gun back together and it was much louder then before. I was at a loss as to how to figure. Only thing I did was to remove the barrel and the moderator and I did remove the O ring at the probe.
I just could not think I had done anything to the moderator so I took the barrel off and replaced that O ring. Re-installed the barrel and it was perfect .
So was it a bad O ring barrel not seated exactly correctly or what other variable? I was going to call for help but some how this blind squirrel found a nut (doesn’t happen often )

Santa came again. Yo!

When you first reassembled the gun and noticed it was louder, how did it shoot? Just wondering if the transfer port was properly positioned. I don't believe the outside barrel O ring would affect the sound, unless maybe it was missing, but you probably would have noticed a bad fit.

Someone mentioned the shroud being difficult to remove, but it should not be. With the two grub screws removed, it should slide off with just a little friction resistance from the O rings at the each end.

Cleaning with a straw and pull-through works fine, unless you reach a point where the fouling is not being thoroughly removed, which is not uncommon. At that point, a good brushing or polishing may be helpful, and the barrel needs to be removed. If you can't get the moderator off, at least in your case the shroud/moderator assembly is easily removed, so not a big deal.

I really can’t provide much more information. It’s possible that when I applied heat I loosened the part that the moderator threads into. End cap if that is what it is called. That piece may have been designed to not come off and the moderator is threaded on to the gun using that part. I’m assuming that in this case it let go before the threads did. It is a Huggett which may or may not make a difference I’M PRETTY CERTAIN THAT IS WHAT HAPPEN. It came apart at the wrong place

As to the shroud ? Why it did not pull off I don’t know but I agree it seems it should have .

The O ring was not an outer ring it was the O ring right INSIDE the end of the barrel .

Some one really familiar with the daystate rifles should be able to tell us For right now I’m not going to push my luck any further it’s back together and functioning as it should

You are correct, the only two grub screws are the two in the rear of the shroud. The shroud end cap is not threaded, as the carbon fiber shroud is not threading friendly. It's glued on. If yours has come off, just rough it up a little with file or sandpaper and use some two-part epoxy to attach it. Mine came off the second time I shot the rifle, flew right off with the Donny silencer attached! Luckily nothing was damaged.
