Moderator Build Questions

Taking a shot at building my own moderator for my Zbroia FC 550 .22 cal. I’m pretty good at reverse engineering but I’ve got nothing to go by for this project. I’ll be using 1 1/2” aluminum thin wall tube. .025” thick. I’ve got two different lengths the short one has an internal length of 3 3/4” and the long one has an internal length of 6 1/2”. What should I use for sound dampening material and how much ? What you see in my photo is basic packing foam. The yellow disk/baffle is foam core board. And then I have some heavyweight felt that is used for mufflers in industrial blowers and vacuum pumps. Also I read (but can’t find the thread) about drilling a few small holes at the back end of the shroud. I feel that’s something I should do.
So, if you’ve made a suppressor what did you put inside of it ? Any other helpful criticism would be appreciated.
Thanks

So I used thin plywood inside a pvc pipe and in between that I just used a tampon. Worked pretty good. I found that I had to take some of the wood washers out to get better dampening. More space = more reduced noise. Those black washers you have should work fine. Air velocity sport shows a tutorial on a pvc moderater. It's worth a watch even if the material is different. Honestly I think you are on the right track. It's more simple than people think. I found that I didn't even need alot of the sound dampening material. Just use enough to hold your air stripper in place and get as much open space to absorb the air. That's why springs and baffles work so good. They don't have any sound dampening material at all. Good luck man let us know how it turns out.

One of the quietest and most well regarded cans in the UK is the Weihrauch one. All that's inside is washers, a hair curler and some felt. Unequal sized chambers. Id start with that.

I've had a couple moderators from other makers as well and they were very similar and also worked quite well. Keep it simple for the first stab. Might be all it takes.

Thanks you guys.
Yeah. All I’ve seen about these things is that they are simple.
Radon1942 I’ll check our that video. And that’s one thing I’ve noticed is all the space inside. And not a lot of “stuff”.
I will pick up some hair curlers when I get a chance. All this stuff is just what I had laying around the shop.
My little bit of experimenting has me now hearing the noises of the hammer and valve . On these bullpups all that stuff is right under your ear. You get rid of one noise and hear all the others. LOL

Anything that cannot withstand repeated harsh blasts, such as hair curlers, can end up hanging in the pellet's path causing weird things with accuracy.

Here is a pic of a hair curler inside carbon fiber tube. What kind of BLAST do you think it would take to make this hair curler get caught up in the pellet path? I would think that it would take a blast capable of blowing the CF tube apart to do something like that, and even then it wouldn't be in the pellet path. Have you ever built a moderator with hair curlers? I have done several and can say that it has NEVER happened to me.

Yo uso el Weihrauch y son geniales. Por el dinero y el rendimiento lo mejor ... imo Nunca miré dentro de uno. Pero funcionan bien. Peso ligero con un bonito acabado. Buena suerte con tu proyecto.

Hi

It is the easiest to manufacture works very well in one .22 cal the outer part is made with the material that is best for you wood, pvc, aluminum, inside you only need 3 hair rollers, a felt sheet, and two washers

Good luck

Volume. Pressure diversion. So, ideally an air stripper or muzzle brake set up to divert large amounts of pressure backwards into a shroud with a pin hole or two. Then ideally some very tight fitting cone baffles. And dense felt in the tip/end of the unit really takes the edge off the report.

That's the most effective way I've found to hush a gun down. I made a custom shroud with a tight brake/stripper on my nova star. With no baffles/moderator, it's shocking how quiet it is. Thread one on, and WOW

I have made a bunch of these over the years and I have found that packing of any kind simply does nothing. It is simply false that any packing silences anything. What does work very well is outer tube-centric baffles. Inverted cone baffles work best, as opposed to flat discs with a central hole because they cause greater turbulence and energy absorption behind the pellet. Each section of the moderator effectively acts like a small expansion chamber which allows the propelling air to reduce pressure and air velocity one section at a time. The hard part is keeping these baffles fastened tightly at your chosen spacing without excessive weight and or consumption of chamber volume. It is also another old wives tale that close bore tolerance is a requirement........it isn't, a clearance of moderator bore to pellet clearance of .020" (.5mm) works well without any chance of clipping.

These are a lot of work to make just one. If you value your time, just buy one. I only make those things I cannot buy.
