REPLACEABLE TARGET BACKING. I build my pellet traps with a 3 sided open top frame on the front of the trap to hold a piece of card board I can replace easily when it is shot up too much . I can slide it up and out, I learned to make the frame deep enough to hold 2 pieces of cardboard so I can remove one and replace it with a new one while the second one retains the rubber mulch in my trap box.

This right here is what brought me to my "Easy rubber mulch target build" the tote can be placed on it's back, lid comes off easy, replace the cardboard with a fresh one, replace lid (which stays under a little tension) and you are good to go again. I had build a very heavy duty one out of 2x4s and 2x6s with the same sliding feature, but it ultimately did not work the way I had hoped. Using the 2 pieces is pretty smart idea though.
