Maximus Hunters Kit (graphic content added)

Ordered the above kit this evening. I always enjoyed the Discovery as I owned a number of them and thought the Maximus was worth a try. What caught my attention was the hunter kit is listed with no sights due to the packaged scope. The picture shows the same threaded adapter as the euro version gets. Curious to see what is on the end of the barrel when I receive mine?

With the low price, longer barrel, and still the same foundation as a Discovery, I am excited to start tuning the Maximus. I do plan on upgrading to a marauder trigger in the near future.

"ztirffritz"Ok, that kind of pisses me off. I haven't shot the gun but one time and they've already released updates to it after Chip said they weren't selling it with the threaded barrel in the US.
I wouldn't get too worked up. Based on the pictures the barrel isn't threaded. They have an adapter that slips on the barrel and is held by set screws similar to what Discos R Us sells. They will probably send you one if you press them about it. If you really want a muffler for it, I would just get a TKO as they are highly effective and simply slip on and set screws secure it.

Well from Chip's post; – Maximus Hunter Kit ProPick! Full power .22 with a 6×40 scope, threaded barrel and a tin of the new Copper Magnum
pellets
.

I understand things changing but when I ordered my .22 maximus they sent a .177. So I had to print a ups label, repack the rifle, and drive to the UPS and ship it. This was two weeks ago. So I called this morning to check on the status of the rifle and they said they would ship the correct rifle out today. So I asked them since the order was messed up if they would let me change the rifle being shipped to the hunter kit and pay any difference. And they told me NO you can only order them online. I was a little disappointed in crosman in that. I have 2 of the custom shop guns and 4 other crosman rifles. (I did make a 55 yard shot on a starling this morning with my new .22 marauder that sounded like Rocky hitting a side of beef! so all is not lost) lol So ill just get a TKO slip on later.

The gun arrived today after I had left for work. I just got home from work and unboxed it. My suspicions were correct. The barrel is not threaded. There is an adapter that is held by a set screw to the barrel that is threaded 1/2 20.

I measured trigger pull with my trusty Lyman digital. It is a stiff 4lbs 5oz.

I just filled to 2000psi and here are the results with the supplied copper 15.9gr pellets. 810fps avg for 21 shots with an ES of 34fps. I am actually impressed to receive a gun from Crosman that is actually tuned!!

The feels very light and balanced with the synthetic stock. I have always loved the Discovery and this synthetic version is nice. My scale shows it at 4.9lbs bare gun.

Overall I am happy thus far. The supplied Centerpoint 6x40 scope seems decent. Focus down to 5 yards and a nice reticle. As well as it is tuned out of the box, I might mount the scope and shoot it awhile before I tear it apart and start tinkering?

BTW, the bolt pull is very stiff!!

Just did a quick 2 screw trigger mod and replaced the stock spring with a much lighter on and now have a very solid single stage breaking at 3lbs 6oz.

UPDATE: I cut a different spring and have a solid single stage at 2lbs 14oz.

I think for its intended use and to keep from putting too much money in a bargain pcp, I am satisfied with the trigger and won't be installing a Marauder trigger group.

For those of us that did the pre-order of the Maxi this would be good news since now all we have to do is order the adapter to get rid of the blade on the end of the rifle.
And mine at 20 yards groups about the same as yours AJ. I just put a scope on mine this morning so later today if I find time I'm going to see what it does at longer distances up too 50 yards.(I don't expect much past 35-40 yards but I'm testing a new Mrod .22 that looks good at 20 yards with a number of diff pellets so while I have targets set up every 10 yards ill test them both)

Congrats on your new Max! I'm guessing it's pretty loud without a TKO? My Disco sounded like a .22 powder burner before I put a TKO on it. I only got the 5" version & was amazed at high quiet it made it! Only downside was I had to file it down in the area near the fill nipple to make it easier to fill. You won't have that problem with the Max if you get one, with the longer barrel. I really like the looks of the Max!

Ed

BTW, your #s are just about identical to my Disco's out of the box.

Hmmm, after looking at your pics again you wouldn't be able to use a TKO. I'm sure there's a different moderator that would screw on, maybe a Hatsan?

I have owned 6 different discoverys all of which had tko's. The tko's work well, but I always hated grinding them to make room for the fill fitting. Very smart move by Crosman to lengthen the barrel on the Maximus to address that issue. The end of the barrel is removable on the Maximus, so both a thread on ldc like an NC ldc or other threaded ldc can be used or a slip on like tko or an NC slip on could be used as well. The convenience of being able to thread on and off at will is nice. The only issue I have had with tko's is the threads in the delrin that hold the set screws strip easy.

This is all looking really encouraging, but how about the wiggly breech /poi shifts that result from the tiny breech screw being the most forward attachment to the air tube? I only had one example of the Discovery type guns (Katana) but finally sold it because I couldn't remedy the POI shifts. Everyone else seems to be OK with the platform so maybe I just got a dud? I did like the light weight and especially the lower working pressure since I fill with scuba tanks. I now own a CZ s200 which fills the niche the Discovery would have in my airsenal, but it would be nice to be able to recommend the Maximus to beginners on a budget.

I'm very surprised at how well the maxi shoots(only out to 35 yards for now) but its the worse trigger I have ever had on a rifle. But I'm taking a tip from AJ and change the spring and do some polish work on the trigger group. If it shoots well with this trigger it has to help me with a smoother one? Maybe the .22 barrel in the Maxi won't have the issues the Mrod has had at times?

John, I never had poi problems with any of my disco's and thus far, the Maximus is holding poi just fine.

I was always under the impression that the only issues with the tiny breech screw were if the gun was converted to high power .25 or larger calibers. The fix for that was to put a second barrel band right up against the front of the breech and inlet the stock to fit.

I did have a couple disco's that I used 2 barrel bands. One clear out towards the muzzle end and one tight to the stock for end. Never could tell that it made much difference, but it surely made the barrel solid!!

Doing the 2 screw mod really helps the trigger. I think I am going to add the 3rd screw and see if I can get it a little better. The marauder trigger really makes the Discovery/Maximus a great gun, but it does add a bit of cost to what is supposed to be a bargain pcp.
