@steve123
Seems like I remember you stating you tried out the 5-42. How has the 5-42 been working out? Have you found it significantly better than the 5-40?
Yes I did get the 5-42, it's extremely impressive in all ways but one. Turns out that my old eyes don't see above 35x well with it, it gets dim-ish and slightly unfocused looking to me at 42x. At 20x it's stellar though, the best I've seen of any scope so far. I went to a NRL22 match and had some younger shooters look through it and they thought it was wonderful on 42x ???!!! So I figure that when the exit pupil gets really small my eyes won't tolerate it and my older friends feel the same as me. We put this March, a Kahles 5-25, and a Cronus BTR 4.5-29, all on 15x to compare in a side by side, and the March was without a doubt superior to the three of us. The FOV is amazing as well and it has 40 mils of elevation travel.
I was told by Mari at Deon that because the scope is so short it has certain optical compromises. Below is what she described.
"""""In order to increase the elevation travel amount, this scope is short. Short length of the scope is not the only factor that determines IQ,
but when comparing scopes within the same brand,
generally the shorter the scopes are, IQ will be less.
In order to complement the short length of 5-42x56, we assembled Super ED lenses.
Therefore if you compare to a longer scope such as 10-60x56
you will find that 10-60x56 has a better IQ even with the same Super ED lenses.""""""
Me, as to the FX 5-40, it has slightly better IQ to me at 40x compared to 40x on the 5-42. I don't like the reticle in the 5-40 and love the reticle in the 5-42 so.....
The 1.5-15 of course won't have such a small exit pupil so I'd be fine. If the new Athlon Helos 2-12 FFP doesn't suit me I think I'll buy this 1.5 -15 anyway and just dial. Holdoffs at 15x would be .75 mil per hash though, and I could always turn it down to 10x for correct mils if need be.
