Marauder range report

Being an

instructor has a few advantages. Notably, access to the department range with no one around. Yesterday was my first chance to shoot my new Marauder in 177 caliber. I shot at 25 yards from a bipod and sandbag. The best two groups were around 3/4 inch at 25 yards for ten shots. I only tried Crosman pellets and the heavier of the two I shot were most accurate. Is it the usual case that heavier is more accurate?

I will say that airgun benchrest is a bit different. No recoil and it appears that "hold" or technique is a big influence on accuracy. I may also try weight sorting to see if that helps.

Definitely sort pellets by head size and see what size your barrel likes best. Along with keeping the speed down with the heavier pellets, finding the head size your barrel likes will be the thing that will most imporve the accuracy of your rifle. Of course, other things can improve accuracy as well, but if your shooting 4.54 head size pellets and your barrel likes the 4.51's the best, you're just not going to get the best results that you could.

Also, try some JSB pellets and see how they shoot out of your barrel. The heavy 10 gr or monster 13gr pellets might be a good place to start.

Have fun with the quest for better accuracy!

Much like a muzzle loader, the airgun has a slow fiiring cycle. Follow through after the shot is critical to maintain sight alingment. Compared to smokeless powder guns, the pellet is 1/5 to 1/3 the velocity, and will spends more time in interior ballistics. Note also the pellets do much better at a solid subsonic velocity due to their drag stabilization vs the spin stabilization of the powder burners.

It will be interesting to witness your blossoming as an air gunner, coming from a (presumably handgun) instructor background. I carry professionally and would welcome further discussion via p.m. if you desire.

Welcome to Airgun Nation 😎

Mine likes 10.5 grain crosman domes in the 1250 count, barracuda hunters, JSB 10.34. Un sorted these all shoot very nice The best are the barracuda hunters even the extremes shoot well and average .3” to .4” groups at .25 meters. I just got a box of crosman I sent back that weren’t worth shooting and a tin of JSB 10.34 that are so bad they aren’t worth shooting either. No visible problem I can see off hand with either of them. The H&N barracuda hunters beat the JSB in my gun/ tune. The only light pellet I found that shoots excellent are Benjamin in the 750 count tin. I will try a few more of those but suspect consistency from tin to tin will differ more than the European brands-just a guess. With the crap JSB & Crosman batches, for those wondering, I know the pellets were bad because groups returned to normal when I went back to my known good pellets. Try the pellets I listed one of them will shoot for you.

My Marauder is regulated, Lothar Walther barrel, and tuned to 780fps with the 4.5mm heavies fyi

While you are trying pellets in the marauder, don't assume the AA 8.4 and the JSB 8.4 are the same pellet. My marauder shoots the AA great, and the JSB just so so. Many people say they are the same, but so far my marauder sure knows the difference. Also, try different head sizes. Pyramid sells two different head sizes for the AA. Mine likes the 4.52 size.
