Marauder mrod or air avenger

I have both.

Marauder pros

More quiet

nicer stocks

match grade trigger

5 year warranty

readily available spares

hand pump capable to max pressure

adjustable cheek weld

overall fit and finish

Avenger pros

Affordable

equally accurate to the Marauder

more shots per fill (300 bar)

externally adjustable regulator

side lever cocking

Typically, pros of one are the cons of the other. Both are great guns. Obviously, I've got way more pellets down range with the Marauder. Just a super reliable workhorse. The Avenger isn't as refined. But the value is most certainly there.

Better?? You will have to decide yourself.

Marauder all metal and nice wood stock. Avenger mostly plastic even with the wood stock. Marauder is heavy once added a scope. Avenger is lighter. Avenger newer gun so reliable isn't well know. Marauder been around for 10 years and its known to be reliable gun. Maruder bolt action vs Avenger side lever. Avenger had external adjustable reg. Marauder doesn't have a reg unless you buy the field target version but still isn't adjustable from outside. The marauder is so quiet all you hear is the ping from the hammer hitting the valve. There is no such thing as one is better than the other. It all comes down to what do you want. We can't tell you which to go for since that is all up to the buyer. Either one will be a good rifle.

Suggest checking out Matt Dubber's Air Gun 101 videos to best understand the basics of regulated vs. unregulated air gun. In your place, six months ago, I chose Umarex Gauntlet over Marauder for this reason. As noted earlier, Marauder is available with regulator, but in a higher priced version. Also, research, well documented, "poppet" concerns, with Avenger. Good luck with your decision.

Well, as long as you asked...

Iirr, the poppet failure on all variants of the avenger series is still a problem, and poppets at least in the past, were not in stock. other than from custom shops making custom poppets, if you can even source one of those easily.

To me thats the determining factor. As having a cheap good rifle that no longer works, without parts to fix it, isn't really a savings. Maybe others that know more about these rifles will chime in on the poppet problem and tell us if it is fixed yet...?

Mrod 5 year warranty from NY. Warranty is very easy to use. With most all parts readily available, if out of the 5 year warranty. Made in America, warranty in America, made by Americans... Regulators on Mrod are not needed unless you are a competition shooter, and even then maybe not. Search forum for,, reg creep, reg problems, reg leaks, etc. Sometimes less is more...

But the Avenger has a side lever, a regulator, 1 year warranty(maybe..?), lightweight cheesy stock, and shoots very well, until it doesn't...

Lots of happy owners of both.

Your choice

I do not have any Mrod experience but I have a Prod and I like it. I also have a 25 caliber Avenger. The trigger on the Prod is better than the Avenger even with work on the Avenger including a new longer sear engagement screw. But the Avenger trigger is not bad now. I've spent time tuning both and the Avenger shoots better than the Prod. Both will shoot 1/4 inch groups at 33 yards but the Avenger does it most of the time. It is more occasional with the Prod.

My Avenger leaked when I got it and I shot it some but decided I wanted it fixed. I called Air Venturi and they were very nice about it and gave me the return authorization with no hassle. I didn't get it back for about 5 weeks but it was fixed, it has held 4000+ for over a week now (busy doing other stuff). I've had the Prod longer and it worked well right out of the box and has needed nothing. I haven't ordered parts for it yet but I have ordered parts from Crosman for my pump ups and got great service. Not sure where I would find parts for the Avenger - but I would start with a call to Air Venturi.

My Avenger is noisier but it is tuned to 50 fpe where the Prod is at about 18 fpe.

I think everything on the Avenger that needs to be metal is. I think people are judging the material by the appearance in some cases. There is a plastic cover over the block with the transfer port and other things but it is just a cover. The guts are metal. I don't like the fact that mine initially leaked but I think Air Venturi's response was good. I've seen a report of a Prod leaking too. It may happen more on the Air Venturi, I don't know. But it can happen on any air gun and what you need is an effective response if it happens. I know Air Venturi honored their warranty without issue and I am pretty sure Crosman would too.

I like the side lever, the regulator, and the wide range of power availability of the Avenger. I like the even lighter weight, better trigger, and the small size of the Prod. I like both guns.

I got into the sport recently (pesting) and went through all these decisions in the last few months. I looked at both and settled on the Avenger (.177) due to cost, but then returned it over concerns about parts and support down the road. I think either one is great in the near time frame but what happens later when you need parts? The Marauder has so much forum support and easily available, affordable parts through Crosman (cheap, US sourced), and after market due to member support. I returned the Avenger and bought a used Mrod, with a regulator and haven't looked back. I've torn it down, rebuilt it, and learned in the process. From there, well, you buy more stuff (Yong Heng pump), etc. Also, with the discount from AGNation at Crosman you get 20% off. Down the road I'll probably buy a new one, but the 5 year warrantly is a nice to have, but likely not needed, again, due to forum support.

Good luck with the decision.

I can't answer your question....but the poppet issue is supposedly resolved (in the wood stock versions at this time). See here (Tyler Patner even chimed in): https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/air-venturi-avenger-poppet-factory-upgrade-finally/?referrer=1

How does one get a 20% discount from Crosman?

My opinion is to buy the Mrod unless the Avengers start coming with a better poppet from the factory. I have 3 ATI Nova Freedoms that ALL failed because of the poppet issue (after the failure of the onboard pump) and I will not be going that direction again. JFYI, the Freedom/Liberty are essentially the same guns as the Avenger as far as the poppet and many other parts.

I have a Fortitude Gen2 in .177 now and although it does have some problems/idiosyncrasies, it shoots, has shot several thousand pellets, produces 1 MOA or less out to 60 yards and does it with CPUM 10.5 pellets @ 12-13 fpe. Not to mention that it does it quietly! The Avenger will need a moderator if you want it to be quiet.

All I need for pesting from 10 to 40 yards in my back yard. (smile) However, I DO wish the Mrods/Prods/Fortitude had a side lever instead of the bolt. The side lever on the Freedoms spoiled me.

Here is a very recent example. 20 yard head shot on a mouse at night.

Oh, and AGNATION gives 25% off at Crosman.com, last time I used it.

Yep, just checked on Crosman site and it is still 25% off using AGNATION.

Too bad they don't offer "free shipping Friday" anymore... (sigh)
